Credible Signaling¶
Create or require hard-to-fake signals so hidden quality, commitment, safety, capacity, or intent can be trusted enough for coordination.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: The informed party needs to be believed, but ordinary claims cost nothing to make. Low-quality or low-commitment actors can produce the same words, badges, or certificates as genuine ones, so receivers discount all of it. Good actors cannot distinguish themselves and get pooled under the same skeptical terms as bad ones.
Pivot: Define a signal that maps the hidden quality, capacity, or commitment to observable evidence whose cost or constraint differs meaningfully across types. The signal does not need to be expensive for everyone — it needs to be harder or riskier for false claimants than for truthful ones, and verifiable or interpretable by receivers.
Resolution: Receivers can update their beliefs on evidence that is difficult to fake, rather than falling back on prestige or incumbency as proxies. Coordination, trust, access, or selection can proceed on a more reliable informational basis, and the signal is monitored to remain credible over time.

Diagnostic problem

What this problem means

Without credible signaling, good actors cannot distinguish themselves from bad actors, receivers over-rely on weak proxies, and low-quality mimics can imitate the visible surface of high-quality actors. Over time, signals can also decay: credentials become stale, badges are copied, audits are captured, reputations are manipulated, and once-costly demonstrations become easy to automate.

Mechanisms / Implementations¶
- Audit or Attestation: Sends an independent examiner to inspect the claim or system directly and issue a scoped opinion, so belief rests on a competent outsider's findings rather than the sender's say-so.

- Proof of Work: Requires the sender to attach a hard-to-produce, easy-to-check artifact of expended effort, so the cost of faking the signal is paid up front and verified cheaply.
- Public Commitment: Puts a commitment on the record before an audience whose regard the promisor values, so backing out later carries a visible reputational cost.
- Tracked History or Reputation Record: Accumulates a durable, visible trace of past outcomes and behavior, so a sender's history — and the future cost of ruining it — vouches for present claims.
- Warranty or Guarantee: Backs a commitment with a promised remedy — repair, replacement, or refund — that the promisor owes if the thing fails, so the promise costs the maker, not just the relying party.
