Domain Specificity Of Confidence¶
Keep confidence local: claim high confidence only inside domains where evidence, experience, feedback, and transfer conditions support it, and explicitly downgrade confidence outside those domains.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: Experts give strong answers outside their training, feedback history, or evidence base, and the audience defers because the speaker's credential is real even if its scope is not. Organizations treat success in a core market as proof that adjacent expansion will be easy. Confidence remains constant even as evidence quality, context similarity, or feedback reliability changes across domains.
Pivot: Map the domains in which confidence has actually been earned, inventory the warrants supporting that confidence, test whether the current claim falls inside or outside those boundaries, and apply explicit confidence downgrades or transfer gates when it does not — making scope-limited confidence visible to decision makers.
Resolution: Fewer decisions are driven by false authority. Communication becomes clearer about what an actor knows well, knows partially, and does not know. Expert referral, validation testing, and cross-domain collaboration improve, and an epistemic culture emerges where admitting out-of-domain uncertainty is treated as competence rather than weakness.
