Equity Adjustment¶
Adjust rules, resources, supports, or access conditions to account for materially different starting conditions or barriers.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: Formally identical treatment produces unequal practical outcomes: some participants complete the process easily while others face hidden costs, workarounds, or repeated failure that the standard process never acknowledges. Support depends on who knows to ask for it, and informal exceptions accumulate without governance. The standard is defended as neutral even as aggregate outcomes reveal a persistent gap.
Pivot: Hold the legitimate core standard firm while identifying the materially different starting conditions or barriers that make equal rules unequally burdensome. Select a bounded, rationale-documented adjustment — to rules, resources, supports, or the environment — that reduces differential burden without abandoning the standard or creating unchecked discretion.
Resolution: Practical access becomes fairer without the core standard eroding. Discretion becomes more disciplined because adjustments are reviewable rather than ad hoc. The system learns about barriers rather than hiding them, and dignity is preserved throughout.
