Fluency Based Preference Exploitation¶
Increase liking or acceptance of a target by making it repeatedly encountered, easy to recognize, and safe-feeling, without changing the target’s substantive content.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: A target is available and substantively sound, yet people keep rejecting or ignoring it before its merits are considered. The friction is not about the content — it is about the feeling of strangeness. Competing options gain advantage simply because they feel more familiar, and even repeated exposure does not help because no one has designed the encounters deliberately.
Pivot: Stop changing the content and redesign the exposure ecology instead. Define the stable target, place repeated low-friction encounters in neutral or positive contexts, tune dose and spacing to let recognition accumulate naturally, and install guardrails against overexposure and familiarity-as-truth substitution.
Resolution: Unfamiliarity friction falls and the target can finally be evaluated on its merits. Teams gain the ability to distinguish genuine preference from mere familiarity, and saturation limits prevent the mechanism from becoming manipulative or backfiring into reactance.

Diagnostic problem
A target that may be useful, valid, benign, or strategically important is evaluated with friction because it is unfamiliar, cognitively effortful, visually novel, socially unestablished, or not yet integrated into routine recognition.
