The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: The same term appears with different meanings in different parts of the story. Exceptions are treated as proof of the narrative in one passage and silently ignored in another. A causal sequence the narrative requires would need actors, events, or capacities that the narrative elsewhere denies. Revision history shows contradictions being renamed rather than resolved.

Pivot: Externalize the metanarrative into a claim-and-dependency structure, define consistency criteria, and audit contradictions and exceptions. Then revise scope, terms, claims, or narrative architecture until the story either coheres within stated limits or is rejected as incoherent.

Resolution: Contradictions and unsupported exceptions become visible and actionable rather than hidden inside persuasive language. Narratives become narrower, clearer, and more defensible -- or are rejected. Decision, scholarship, or strategy built on the narrative becomes less brittle because the claims it rests on have been explicitly tested.
