Novelty Driven Attention Capture¶
Make a target noticeable by breaking a stable pattern just enough to trigger attention, then connect that break to the intended meaning or action before the novelty becomes noise.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: Users miss important changes because the screen, message, or workflow always looks the same; every item has been highlighted, producing emphasis inflation and no real attentional priority. Alarms and notifications are ignored because novelty cues are too frequent or too weakly tied to actual importance, and the team keeps adding louder colors or more urgent wording without improving noticing or action.
Pivot: Model the current expectation baseline, select a meaningful departure from it, calibrate departure intensity and frequency, connect the departure to the intended target, and then restore a stable background — so the cue remains rare enough to matter and the captured attention routes to comprehension or action rather than stopping at sensation.
Resolution: Important signals differentiate themselves from routine background; emphasis inflation decreases because novelty is reserved for bounded targets; habituation, alarm fatigue, and novelty wear-out are managed; and the transition from attention capture to interpretation or decision becomes clearer.
