Reciprocity Protocol Design¶
Structure mutual obligations so exchange, cooperation, and trust remain balanced over time.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: A cooperative relationship is sustaining itself through the contributions of a small number of reliable participants while others benefit without reciprocating. The most committed contributors are burning out; the strategic undercontributors continue to benefit; and when people complain that the arrangement is one-sided, the relationship has no structure for naming, measuring, or repairing the imbalance. Trust erodes either into rigid accounting or into resentful silence.
Pivot: Design a reciprocity protocol that defines the participating parties, the obligations each carries, how contributions are made visible, what a balanced state looks like, how imbalance is signaled, and what repair or renegotiation path is available before the only correction left is withdrawal or retaliation.
Resolution: Cooperation becomes more sustainable because participants understand what mutuality requires and imbalances are addressable before they become irreversible. Free-riding and hidden burnout decrease because contribution and benefit are both visible. Trust is maintained through legitimate repair rather than pretended equilibrium.

Diagnostic problem
Parties exchange help, resources, information, access, concessions, or benefits without a shared structure for mutuality, so cooperation can drift into free-riding, hidden burden, resentment, opportunism, or exploitation.
What this problem means
The structural problem is ungoverned mutuality. Parties exchange value, help, labor, access, or trust without a shared answer to basic questions: who is reciprocating with whom, what counts as contribution, when return is due, how imbalance is detected, and what happens when one party gives or takes too much.
Without this structure, cooperation tends to oscillate between two bad states. In one state, everyone relies on vague goodwill until contributors burn out or quietly withdraw. In the other, people impose rigid accounting that destroys trust and generosity. The archetype holds a middle path: enough structure to prevent exploitation, enough flexibility to preserve relationship and dignity.
