Recursive Triangulation Of Triangulation¶
When a conclusion already rests on triangulation, audit the triangulation itself by checking whether its evidence streams are independent, its convergence logic is valid, and its confidence claim survives a second-order triangulation layer.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: A high-confidence conclusion rests on the fact that multiple independent sources agree — but when you trace those sources, they all cite the same upstream dataset, share the same institutional sponsor, or were produced by the same expert community using the same theoretical lens. The appearance of convergence is real; the independence that convergence requires is not.
Pivot: Make the original triangulation procedure itself the object of audit: check whether evidence streams are genuinely independent, whether the convergence rule is explicit and applied consistently, and whether second-order evidence constrains the procedure being reviewed. Apply a stop rule proportional to stakes, not infinite regress.
Resolution: False confidence from circular or overdependent triangulation is reduced. Confidence is recalibrated — updating the scope and allowed uses of the original conclusion — rather than converted to a binary pass or fail. Conflicting evidence and outliers are handled by explicit rules, not informal dismissal.
Reach for this when you hear…¶
[systematic review] “Three RCTs agree, but two of them share the same PI and the third used their unpublished scale — that's not three independent data points.”
[intelligence analysis] “All four source reports confirm the same location, but I want to know whether any of those sources actually saw it themselves or are all repeating the same original signal.”
[financial audit] “We verified the revenue figure three ways, but all three methods ultimately traced back to the same internal booking system — we didn't actually triangulate anything.”
When This Archetype Applies¶
Partial catalog groundingSome structural conditions are represented by existing abstractions, but no sufficient condition set is fully represented.
Diagnostic problem
A claim, model, diagnosis, evaluation, or decision has been justified by triangulation, but the triangulation procedure may itself be biased, circular, overdependent, miscalibrated, or insensitive to conflicts among evidence streams.

Multi-stream confidence claim · grounded
A decision cites multiple methods, sources, observers, or perspectives as confidence evidence.
The source archetype describes the situation as follows: A decision cites multiple methods, data sources, observers, or perspectives as evidence of confidence. The normalized requirement above isolates the load-bearing portion used in this condition set.
Shared upstream dependencies · open
Evidence streams share upstream data, instruments, assumptions, incentives, theories, or institutions.
The source archetype describes the situation as follows: The evidence streams may share upstream data, instruments, assumptions, incentives, theory commitments, or institutional sources. The normalized requirement above isolates the load-bearing portion used in this condition set.
Unexplained agreement · open
Evidence sources agree but the cause of agreement is unclear.
The source archetype describes the situation as follows: Different evidence sources agree, but the reason for agreement is unclear. The normalized requirement above isolates the load-bearing portion used in this condition set.
Ungoverned disagreement · open
Evidence streams disagree without a rule for weakening, refining, or rejecting the conclusion.
The source archetype describes the situation as follows: Evidence sources disagree, and the team lacks a rule for interpreting whether the conflict weakens, refines, or invalidates the conclusion. The normalized requirement above isolates the load-bearing portion used in this condition set.
Unaudited transfer reuse · open
A triangulation procedure is reused across contexts without auditing transfer boundaries.
The source archetype describes the situation as follows: The triangulation procedure has been reused across contexts, time windows, populations, or systems without auditing transfer boundaries. The normalized requirement above isolates the load-bearing portion used in this condition set.

Why these sit outside the expression
Application gate — it governs whether applying the archetype is appropriate or material, rather than defining the structural problem itself.
Goal — a goal states an intended outcome or evaluation criterion, not a pre-existing situation that independently summons the archetype.
Application gateThe stakes are high enough that “we triangulated it” is not sufficient without validating the triangulation design.
GoalReviewers need to know whether to trust, narrow, repeat, redesign, or reject the original triangulated conclusion.

Mechanisms / Implementations¶
- Confidence Scope Update Memo: Publishes the recalibrated conclusion — what remains supported, what scope has narrowed, what dependencies remain, and which uses are now allowed or barred.
- Convergence Logic Rubric: Fixes in advance how agreement, conflict, outliers, and missing evidence should move confidence, so convergence is interpreted by rule rather than by mood.
- Independent Meta-Review Panel: Convenes reviewers with no stake in the original procedure to judge whether its independence, convergence logic, and cross-level conclusions actually hold up.
- Meta-Validation Stop Gate: Decides when recursive validation has done enough — when another layer would not move confidence, when it must continue, and when the procedure must be redesigned.
- Method Provenance Review: Traces backward how each method, source, and interpretation entered the triangulation so circular or copied lineage cannot masquerade as independent corroboration.
- Second-Order Replication Probe: Independently re-runs the triangulation with fresh inputs to see whether the same convergence reproduces or was an artifact of the original setup.
- Triangulation Dependency Matrix: Cross-tabulates the evidence streams against shared dependency dimensions — data source, instrument, analyst, assumptions, incentives, timing, theory frame — so independence that is only nominal becomes visible at a glance.
- Triangulation Red-Team Review: Assigns adversaries to find a way the triangulation could have converged on a wrong answer, hunting for the shared dependency the procedure took for granted.

Problem Classification¶
Classification: Uncertainty, Evidence & Inference Failure → Evidence Fusion, Correlation & Expert Aggregation
Problem kernel: triangulated evidence may be dependent or circular
Rationale: Earliest causal condition: A claim, model, diagnosis, evaluation, or decision has been justified by triangulation, but the triangulation procedure may itself be biased, circular, overdependent, miscalibrated, or insensitive to conflicts among evidence streams.
Independent corroboration: The earliest necessary condition in the frozen evidence is: A claim, model, diagnosis, evaluation, or decision has been justified by triangulation, but the triangulation procedure may itself be biased, circular, overdependent, miscalibrated, or insensitive to conflicts among evidence streams. That is a evidence fusion correlation and expert aggregation problem because Multiple signals, sources, models, or experts are combined without reliability weights, independence checks, shared-lineage controls, or conflict handling.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.
