Revision Readiness Precommitment

Specify in advance what evidence would change a belief, forecast, diagnosis, or strategy so that later revision is easier, more accountable, and less vulnerable to motivated reinterpretation.

The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: The decision-maker says they are open to changing their view, but when inconvenient evidence arrives the goalposts shift: the evidence is reinterpreted, the standard was different from what was implied, or a new qualification appears that was never mentioned before. Debates about whether to revise a belief or strategy become debates about what the revision standard was supposed to be — and those debates are settled by whoever has more status, not by the evidence.

Pivot: Before the evidence arrives, define explicitly what would be sufficient to trigger revision: the current claim, the alternative, the observable that would discriminate between them, the threshold, and the action that follows. The structural move is separating the definition of the revision standard from the moment when keeping the existing commitment becomes personally or institutionally costly.

Resolution: Revision becomes more accountable because the standard was established when incentives were neutral. Goalpost shifting is visible rather than hidden because the precommitted condition can be compared against the post-hoc interpretation. The organization learns faster from forecasts and experiments because the update logic was defined before the result was known.
