Circular Reasoning¶
Diagnose an argument whose conclusion already appears among its premises by tracing its justification graph for a cycle that never touches a node the audience grants independently.
Core Idea¶
Circular reasoning (petitio principii, begging the question) is the defect in which the conclusion an argument is meant to establish already appears, in equivalent form, among its premises — making the inference impeccably valid but justificatorily empty. A proper argument runs justificatory edges from premises the audience accepts toward the contested conclusion; a circular one collapses that into a cycle with no external anchor, moving the dialectic nowhere.
Scope of Application¶
Circular reasoning lives across the argumentation subfields where someone tries to show a claim rather than assert it, bounded to substrates that supply a reasoning audience.
- Informal logic and rhetoric — the canonical petitio principii, inventoried since Aristotle.
- Legal reasoning — a precedent invoked to ground the rule under which it was decided.
- Theological apologetics — the inerrancy syllogism, "Scripture is true because Scripture says so."
- Lexicography and conceptual analysis — the definitional pair (anxiety / anxious) as a two-node cycle.
- Epistemology — coherentism's worry that mutual support closes into an unanchored circle.
Clarity¶
Naming the fallacy pries apart validity (does the conclusion follow?) from justificatory force (do the premises give an independent reason to accept it?). A circular argument scores full on the first, zero on the second. It also keeps the vicious circle distinct from productive loops, licensing the precise question: which node must the audience grant without this argument supplying it?
Manages Complexity¶
A sprawl of separately cataloged defects — restated-premise, mutual-support, concept-loop, precedent-loop, and authority-loop circles across theology, law, and lexicography — collapses to one graph and one check. The analyst tracks two parameters: whether the justification graph contains a cycle reachable from the conclusion, and whether that cycle has an anchor outside itself.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses paraphrase-invariance testing (does the premise collapse into the conclusion?), dependency-chain walking for a hidden return, an interventionist demand for the exit point, and boundary-drawing by anchoring that distinguishes vicious circles from induction's base case, the hermeneutic spiral, and legitimate coherentist webs.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within argumentation circular reasoning transfers as mechanism across logic, law, theology, lexicography, and epistemology, the same graph and question carried regardless of subject. Beyond it the portable object is literal, not metaphor: an unanchored cycle in a dependency graph recurs in build-system cycle detection and deadlock. But that is the parent acyclicity / well_foundedness; the fallacy's normative, audience-dependent force stays bound to substrates supplying a reasoning audience.
