Four Causes

Explain an Aristotelian thing or change through four complementary aitiai: what it is made from, the form by which it is what it is, the source of change, and that for the sake of which it occurs.

Core Idea

Aristotle's four causes are four complementary kinds of aitia—responsible factor or explanation—needed to answer why a natural thing exists or a change occurs: the material from which it comes, the form or account by which it is what it is, the efficient source that initiates change, and the final cause for the sake of which the process occurs. Aristotle presents the scheme in Physics II.3 and Metaphysics V.2.[1]

“Cause” can mislead modern readers because only the efficient cause closely resembles ordinary event causation. The schema is an explanatory inventory, and multiple answers can jointly explain one object or process.

Structural Signature

  • A thing, process, production, or change requiring explanation.
  • Material cause: the persisting or transformed stuff.
  • Formal cause: the defining structure, essence, or account.
  • Efficient cause: the primary source of motion or change.
  • Final cause: the end or that for the sake of which.
  • Complementarity rather than mutual exclusion among the roles.
  • Dependence on Aristotle's matter–form and actuality–potentiality framework.
  • Application to natural beings as well as artifacts.
  • Explicit separation of natural teleology from conscious intention.
  • A question-relative account of which causes are explanatory.

What It Is Not

It is not a list of four temporally prior events, nor four rival hypotheses. Formal cause is not merely visible shape; final cause is not always a designer's intention; material cause is not modern chemical composition alone. The framework is not interchangeable with counterfactual, interventionist, or statistical causal inference.

Scope of Application

Aristotle applies the schema across physics, biology, psychology, craft, and metaphysics. Falcon emphasizes that aitia covers explanatory factors and that the four kinds answer different why-questions.[2] Hankinson traces the vocabulary of cause and explanation in ancient Greek thought.[3]

Clarity

Identify the explanandum and express each role as an answer to a specific why-question. State when a role is absent or merged rather than forcing four labels. Preserve the difference between Aristotle's own theory and later scholastic developments.

Manages Complexity

The schema prevents an explanation from collapsing into only one dimension. Knowing the maker of an artifact does not tell us its material, organization, or use; knowing a biological mechanism does not by itself settle the organized capacity whose development it serves.

Abstract Reasoning

  1. Define the thing or change to be explained.
  2. Ask what underlying material persists or is transformed.
  3. Ask what organization or essence makes the result this kind of thing.
  4. Ask what initiates or sustains the change.
  5. Ask what end or realized capacity organizes the process.
  6. Test whether each answer explains the same explanandum at the right level.
  7. Examine dependencies among the four roles.
  8. Avoid importing modern causal meanings without argument.

Lloyd shows how Greek inquiry joined causal classification to distinct traditions of demonstration and explanation.[4]

Knowledge Transfer

The portable pattern is audit an explanation across substrate, organization, production, and end rather than treating one answer as exhaustive. It transfers cautiously to design analysis. The proposed immediate parent is Causality.

Examples

For a bronze statue: bronze is material; the statue's defining figure is formal; the sculptor and tools are efficient; and the commemorative or representational end is final. For an oak, matter, organizing form, parents and growth processes, and mature functioning are understood within natural rather than merely intentional teleology.

Multi-role explanation is structural. Aristotelian matter, form, efficient agency, telos, substance, and change are constitutive. The identity is domain-specific.

The structural core is substrate + organization + producer + end -> fuller explanation. The domain accent is Aristotle's theory of aitiai.

Causality is the proposed immediate parent. Explanation, Purpose, Composition, Form, and Agency are related primes.
