Four Ways to Say Why

Think about a clay pot. You can ask four different "why" questions about it. What is it made of? Clay. What shape makes it a pot? A round bowl shape. Who made it? The potter. What is it for? Holding water. A long time ago, a thinker named Aristotle said all four answers help explain the pot.

Aristotle's Four Whys

Aristotle, a philosopher from long ago, said there are four different kinds of answers to "why?" about a thing or a change. The material cause is what it is made of. The formal cause is the shape or plan that makes it what it is. The efficient cause is what started it or made it happen. The final cause is what it is for. These answers work together, so one thing can have all four. Only the third one is like what we usually mean by "cause" today.

Four Kinds of Explanation

Aristotle's four causes are four kinds of explanation, called 'aitia', that together answer why a natural thing exists or why a change happens. The schema prevents an explanation from collapsing into only one dimension. Knowing the maker of an artifact does not tell us its material, organization, or use; knowing a biological mechanism does not by itself settle the organized capacity whose development it serves.
