Middle Ground Fallacy

Detect the error of concluding the truth must lie between two opposed positions merely because they are opposed — substituting a positional operation for an evidential one — by asking whether the midpoint keeps its credibility once one position is shown unsupported.

The midpoint inherits its credibility from the mere existence of two opposed claims, not from evidence; when support is asymmetric, midpoint-taking lands further from the truth than endorsing the better-supported position. It is the converse companion of the false dilemma.

Because it is a diagnostic test, the fallacy applies wherever there are propositions, a reasoner selecting among them, and an evidential context grading the selection.
