Core Idea

Moral particularism is the view that the rationality and competence of moral thought do not depend on possessing and applying a sufficient set of invariant moral principles; prominent versions appeal to holism of reasons, under which a feature can favor action in one context, oppose it in another, or be irrelevant in a third. Other case features enable, disable, intensify, attenuate, or reverse a consideration's normative relevance, so judgment attends to the configuration of reasons rather than treating each feature as carrying one fixed moral valence across all contexts.

Scope of Application

Moral particularism applies when the analyst can specify a moral case containing candidate reasons, enabling and disabling conditions, contextual modifiers, an evaluand, and a judgment about what counts in favor of or against an action and establish that the theory denies that moral competence depends on invariant principle application and explains case sensitivity through variable relevance or another particularist account, while still allowing reasons, rational criticism, and possibly limited generalizations. The entry maps a philosophical position and its objections; it does not offer individualized moral or legal advice or treat contextual sensitivity as permission to ignore reasons.

Clarity

A clear claim names the carrier, governing rule, assumptions, and recognition test. This matters because particularism can mean a thesis about principles, a thesis about reasons, loyalty to particular persons, or loose case-by-case discretion, and these senses are not interchangeable. The disciplined statement is that the object counts as Moral particularism exactly when the theory denies that moral competence depends on invariant principle application and explains case sensitivity through variable relevance or another particularist account, while still allowing reasons, rational criticism, and possibly limited generalizations

Manages Complexity

The abstraction compresses strong and moderate particularism, reasons holism, default-reason accounts, perceptual and skill models of judgment, generalist replies, and particularist-friendly moral realism into a stable carrier, rule, invariant, and failure boundary. It makes comparison tractable while retaining the variables that control validity.

Compression can hide assumptions. A responsible use therefore declares strength of particularism, reason identity, valence, weight, enablers, disablers, alternatives, principles, defaults, moral epistemology, realism, rational criticism, and special pleading and returns to the full diagnostic whenever a convention or boundary case changes.

Abstract Reasoning

  1. Type the carrier. Establish a moral case containing candidate reasons, enabling and disabling conditions, contextual modifiers, an evaluand, and a judgment about what counts in favor of or against an action and reject examples from a different problem. 2. Lock the rule. Express that the theory denies that moral competence depends on invariant principle application and explains case sensitivity through variable relevance or another particularist account, while still allowing reasons, rational criticism, and possibly limited generalizations independently of one notation or implementation.

Knowledge Transfer

Transfer within moral philosophy is strong when new cases preserve the same carrier, mechanism, and diagnostic. The move from A fact such as causing pain normally counts against an action, yet in a justified medical intervention the same pain can be enabled, outweighed, or differently relevant because of consent, purpose, alternatives, and expected benefit. to A promise can normally favor performance, while fraud, coercion, conflict with a stronger duty, or changes in what was promised can alter whether and how that consideration functions. demonstrates that continuity.
