The moralistic fallacy is the inference from normative undesirability to empirical falsity: because a proposition would be morally bad if true, it is treated as false — or as not worth investigating — without any engagement with the evidence bearing on it. Moore's naturalistic fallacy, it names a specific direction of illegitimate is-ought crossing: where the naturalistic fallacy moves from descriptive fact to normative conclusion ("X is natural, therefore X is good"), the moralistic fallacy moves in the reverse direction from normative discomfort to descriptive dismissal ("X would have bad moral consequences, therefore X is not the case"). What It Is Not

  • Not generic motivated reasoning or wishful thinking. Those name the broad tendency to let preference shape belief; the moralistic fallacy is the specific output of that tendency when the input is a moral valence and the output is a factual verdict pronounced without evidential adjudication. Calling any preference-driven belief a "moralistic fallacy" borrows the parent process while dropping the defining normative-input/empirical-output crossing.
  • Not confirmation bias. Confirmation bias selectively weights evidence and is corrected by widening what one attends to. The moralistic fallacy weighs no evidence at all — it dismisses the empirical question wholesale on a moral ground — so the breakdown sits upstream of evidence-handling, and the cure is not better evidence-weighing but forcing the question to reach evidence in the first place.
  • Not the naturalistic fallacy. That is the mirror error, crossing the is-ought boundary in the opposite direction — descriptive-to-normative, "X is natural, therefore X is good." A critic meeting these case by case would have to argue, in each field's own terms, why the moral worry does not settle the factual matter. Bernard Davis, a Harvard microbiologist, coined the term in 1978 — writing against arguments that certain scientific inquiries should be curtailed — to name the mirror of Moore's naturalistic fallacy. The canonical instance runs: a researcher reports that some trait has a measurable heritability; a critic responds not by contesting the data, methods, or confounds, but by objecting that if the claim were true it would justify discrimination — and therefore treats the claim as false, or the question as one that must not be asked. No study is re-examined; no evidence is weighed. A morally unwelcome consequence of the proposition's being true is converted directly into a verdict on its truth. Davis's point was that the moral objection, however serious, bears on what we ought to do, not on what is the case — the empirical question remains open regardless of how uncomfortable its answer would be.

Applied / In Practice

A well-documented real episode is the reception of E. O. Wilson's Sociobiology (1975). When Wilson proposed that some human social behaviors have evolutionary-biological roots, a group of critics (the Sociobiology Study Group, including scientists at his own university) argued in public letters that such claims should be resisted in part because, if accepted, they would furnish a biological justification for existing inequalities of class, race, and sex. Much of the objection ran from the feared social consequences of the hypotheses to a verdict that they were unfounded or illegitimate to pursue, rather than adjudicating the specific evolutionary claims on their evidence. This is the moralistic fallacy in a live scientific controversy: the empirical question of behavioral evolution was, for some participants, foreclosed by the moral danger of a particular answer — even as the separate, legitimate worry about how such findings might be misused remained real.

The decisive test cuts twice: remove the moral valence (a value-free substrate) and there is nothing to do the foreclosing — what remains is generic motivated_reasoning; remove the specifically empirical output and a rejection-because-unwelcome is just appeal_to_consequences. The named fallacy is constituted by exactly the two ingredients the prime bar asks it to shed.

Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime is a relational structure whose vocabulary travels and whose cross-domain transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. The moralistic fallacy's transfer is bimodal. Within claims-that-carry-normative-stakes the move travels intact — the single diagnostic signature (moral input, factual verdict, no adjudication between, in the unwelcome direction) and its corrective (pry apart "what is the case?" from "what should we do?", force the question to reach evidence) run unchanged across genetics, evolutionary psychology, epidemiology, economics, historiography, and even the forward-running climate-communication variant, because every arena supplies the two ingredients the mechanism needs. Beyond that range it does not so much transfer as decompose into its parents: what recurs wherever there is reasoning under preference or value is the is-ought crossing, the motivated_reasoning process, and the appeal_to_consequences shape — not "the moralistic fallacy," whose machinery evaporates the instant a substrate lacks a moral valence for the empirical question to be foreclosed on. Stretching the label to any preference-driven belief (that is just motivated_reasoning) or to any unwelcome-therefore-false move with no moral content (that is appeal_to_consequences) borrows the shape while dropping the defining moral-input/empirical-output crossing — analogy, not the mechanism. So when the bare structural lesson is needed cross-domain, it is already carried, in more general form, by the is-ought distinction / normativity, motivated_reasoning, and appeal_to_consequences. The cross-domain reach belongs to those parents; the Davis-coined label carries the theory-of-reasoning baggage that should stay home.

  • Naturalistic fallacy. The mirror error, coined by G. E. Moore, that crosses the Humean is-ought boundary in the opposite direction — descriptive-to-normative, "X is natural, therefore X is good." The moralistic fallacy runs normative-to-descriptive, "X would be bad if true, therefore it is not so."
