Immaterial Spatial Entity¶
A spatial particular — a hole, room, or border — that has a location, shape, and history yet is constituted of no matter, individuated instead by its relation to material bearers, and admitted (or not) as a first-class entity by whether eliminating it into bearer-talk loses a fact.
Core Idea¶
An immaterial spatial entity is a spatial particular — with a location, shape, and history of change — constituted not by matter but by its relations to material bearers. Holes, rooms, borders, and jurisdictions are the canonical cases: a hole exists wherever the metal is absent, a room is defined by its enclosing walls, a border by the landmarks its geodesic is fixed against. The Casati–Varzi and Smith (BFO) program insists such entities are first-class — subjects of predication, change, and causal or legal relation — against the eliminativist rival that paraphrases them into their hosts.
Scope of Application¶
The category lives across the spatial substrates that share its constitution-type — particulars individuated by the arrangement or absence of material bearers, possessing genuine location.

Clarity¶
Naming the category makes an ontological decision explicit that ordinary talk of holes and borders leaves buried: are such things entities in their own right, or shorthand for facts about their bearers? It surfaces the translation-loss test as the crux — does reducing the hole to a perforated host lose any fact? And it sharpens two modes of individuation, by constituent substance versus by relation-to-bearers, separating the entity from the matter it depends on without collapsing into it.
Manages Complexity¶
Holes, rooms, borders, jurisdictions, easements — confronted one at a time these form a scattered bestiary of ad hoc puzzles. The category compresses it by recognizing one shared constitution-type: individuation by relation to material bearers. A long list of substance-puzzles becomes one individuation question, one first-class/eliminativist binary, and one translation-loss test that settles them together — after which a system can predicate of, track change in, and assign relations to all such entities uniformly.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The category licenses diagnostic classification of individuation mode — constitutive versus relational. It grounds the translation-loss test — attempting the eliminativist paraphrase and inferring first-class status from a surviving diachronic fact.
