Immaterial Spatial Entity¶
A spatial particular — a hole, room, or border — that has a location, shape, and history yet is constituted of no matter, individuated instead by its relation to material bearers, and admitted (or not) as a first-class entity by whether eliminating it into bearer-talk loses a fact.
Core Idea¶
An immaterial spatial entity is a spatial particular — something that has a location, a shape or extent, and a history of change — that is constituted not by matter but by its relations to material bearers. Holes, boundaries, rooms, gaps, jurisdictions, easements, and ecological zones are the canonical cases: a hole in a metal plate exists wherever the metal is absent, individuated by the rim that surrounds it; a room is defined by the enclosing walls and the opening of its doorway, not by any substance filling it; a national border is a geodesic line individuated by the treaty or convention that specifies its position relative to material reference points. In each case the entity's existence depends on material bearers — the host of the hole, the walls of the room, the landmarks of the boundary — but the entity itself is not those bearers; it is constituted by their arrangement or absence.
The philosophical program that formalizes this category, associated with Roberto Casati and Achille Varzi (Holes and Other Superficialities, 1994) and with Barry Smith's work on formal ontology and the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), insists that such entities are first-class — they can be the subjects of predication (the hole is round, the border shifted northward, the jurisdiction expanded), can undergo change over time (the hole grew, the room was subdivided), and can enter into causal and legal relations (the jurisdiction governs, the boundary separates fishing rights). The alternative eliminativist position, which refuses first-class status and translates all talk about holes and boundaries into talk about the material bearers (the plate is perforated here, the two states have an agreement about this longitude), is a coherent competing ontological commitment; the immaterial-spatial-entity framework is distinguished by its insistence that the translation loss is real — that the hole moved when the plate was moved, that the boundary has a history distinct from the histories of the states it separates, and that these are facts about the immaterial entity rather than merely facts about the material host.

What It Is Not¶
- Not nothing. "Immaterial" means constituted of no matter, not that there is nothing there: the entity has a determinate location, a shape or extent, and a history of change (the hole is round, the room has dimensions, the border shifted northward). Absence-with-shape and location-without-fill are positive features that can be predicated of, not the mere lack of an object.
- Not identical to its material bearers. The entity depends on its host, walls, or landmarks — it exists because of their arrangement or absence — but it is not those bearers. The hole is not the perforated plate; the room is not its walls; the boundary is not the states it separates. Constitution by relation-to-bearers is precisely what keeps it distinct from the matter it requires.
- Not mere shorthand for facts about the host. The framework's defining claim is that the eliminativist paraphrase (the plate is perforated here; the two states agree about this longitude) loses a real fact: the hole moved when the plate moved, the boundary has a revision history distinct from the histories of the states it bounds. (Eliminativism is a coherent rival commitment, not a confusion — but the immaterial-entity view is the one that denies the translation is lossless.)
- Not a material object of an unusual kind. It is individuated relationally, by the arrangement or absence of its bearers, not constitutively, by any substance making it up. Treating it as just a thin or rarefied material thing misses that it has no constituent stuff at all — its individuation mode, not its density, is what sets it apart.
- Not the
boundarypattern in general, nor any abstract referential demarcator. A namespace, scope, or package boundary borrows the shape (individuated by what it bounds) but is referential rather than spatial — no material bearers, no genuine location in space. The category covers only spatial particulars meeting the material-bearer precondition; the substrate-general demarcation pattern is carried by theboundaryprime, not by this specifically spatial admission of absence and enclosure.
Scope of Application¶
The immaterial spatial entity lives across the spatial substrates that share its constitution-type — particulars individuated by the arrangement or absence of material bearers and possessing genuine location. Its reach is bounded by that material-bearer precondition: the referential demarcators it resembles (namespaces, scopes, package boundaries) are analogy carried by the boundary prime, not literal habitats, so they stay out of this map.
- Formal and metaphysical ontology — the home machinery: Casati–Varzi on holes, Smith on boundaries and sites, and BFO's material/immaterial split, where holes, gaps, and surfaces are admitted as first-class types.
- Geography and cartography — borders, watersheds, maritime zones, and ecological regions, each individuated by the terrain or landmarks it separates and carrying a revision history distinct from what it bounds.
- Architecture and urban planning — rooms, corridors, courtyards, and vacancies individuated by enclosure rather than fill, the room surviving an open doorway.
- Law and administration — jurisdictions, easements, air rights, and mineral rights as spatial entities individuated by authority relations, where the translation-loss test bites hardest (the jurisdiction expanded, governs, and was contested as itself).
- Geographic information systems — spatial-representation models that must decide whether to admit such relationally-individuated entities as primitives or pay the recurring cost of paraphrasing them into their material hosts.
Clarity¶
Naming the immaterial spatial entity as a category makes an ontological decision explicit that ordinary talk of holes, rooms, and borders leaves buried: whether such things are entities in their own right or merely a convenient shorthand for facts about their material bearers. Without the category, a metaphysician slides between "the hole is round" and "the plate is perforated here" as if they said the same thing; with it, the gap between first-class and eliminativist commitment becomes a question one must answer rather than straddle. The category's clarifying force is to surface the translation-loss test as the crux — does reducing the hole to a perforated host, or the border to an agreement-about-a-longitude, lose any fact? If the hole moved when the plate moved, if the boundary has a revision history distinct from the histories of the states it separates, then there is a fact about the immaterial entity that bearer-talk cannot capture, and admitting it as first-class is what lets that fact be stated at all.
The distinction it sharpens is between two modes of individuation: by constituent substance versus by relation-to-bearers (the rim that surrounds the hole, the walls and doorway that enclose the room, the landmarks the geodesic is fixed against). This separates the immaterial spatial entity from the merely material object it depends on without collapsing into it — the entity exists because of its bearers' arrangement or absence, yet is not those bearers. The sharper question a formal ontologist can then ask of any putative spatial particular is whether it is individuated constitutively or relationally, and, if relationally, whether the system modeling it (a top-level ontology, a treatment of boundaries and sites) will admit it as a bearer of predication, change, and causal or legal relation — or pay the recurring cost of paraphrasing every such claim back into talk of hosts.
Manages Complexity¶
Holes, rooms, gaps, national borders, jurisdictions, easements, air rights, ecological zones — a metaphysician or a formal ontologist confronting these one at a time faces what looks like a scattered bestiary, each item carrying its own ontological puzzle (what is a hole? does a room survive losing a wall? where exactly is a maritime border?), and each tempting a separate ad hoc treatment. The immaterial-spatial-entity category compresses that bestiary by recognizing that all of these share a single constitution-type: they are spatial particulars individuated not by any constituent substance but by their relation to material bearers — the rim that surrounds the hole, the walls and doorway that enclose the room, the landmarks against which the geodesic is fixed. Fixing that one structural fact converts a long list of substance-puzzles into a single question of individuation-mode (constitutive versus relational), so the analyst classifies any putative spatial particular by asking how it is individuated rather than re-deriving its nature from scratch. The category then collapses the ontological decision itself onto one clean binary — first-class versus eliminativist — and supplies a single test that decides it across every case at once: the translation-loss test. Rather than adjudicating holes, borders, and jurisdictions separately, the ontologist asks the same thing of each — does paraphrasing the entity away into talk of its material bearers lose a fact? If the hole moved when the plate moved, if the boundary has a revision history distinct from the histories of the states it separates, the loss is real and first-class admission is forced; if not, elimination suffices. That single branch governs the entire family, and its downstream consequence is equally compressed: admit the category and a system (a top-level ontology, a geographic or legal model) can predicate of, track change in, and assign causal or legal relations to all these entities uniformly, instead of paying the recurring paraphrase cost of rewriting every claim about a hole, a border, or a jurisdiction back into a claim about its host. A sprawling catalog of spatial-particular puzzles thus reduces to one individuation question, one admissibility binary, and one loss-test that settles them together.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The immaterial spatial entity licenses reasoning moves built on two questions the category makes askable of any putative spatial particular: how is it individuated (by constituent substance or by relation to bearers), and can it be eliminated without loss (the translation-loss test that decides first-class versus eliminativist status).
Diagnostic — classify the individuation mode (infer the entity's constitution from how it is fixed): the foundational move is to ask of any spatial particular whether it is individuated constitutively (by the substance that makes it up) or relationally (by the arrangement or absence of its material bearers). From a hole, the analyst infers relational individuation by its rim — it exists wherever the metal is absent; from a room, by its enclosing walls and the opening of its doorway; from a border, by the landmarks the geodesic is fixed against. The diagnostic separates the immaterial entity from the material object it depends on without collapsing into it: the entity exists because of its bearers' arrangement or absence yet is not those bearers. The analyst reasons from "what fixes this thing's location and shape" to its constitution-type, and so classifies any candidate — gap, jurisdiction, easement, ecological zone — by individuation mode rather than re-deriving its nature case by case.
Diagnostic / decision — run the translation-loss test (infer first-class status from a residual fact): the crux move is to attempt the eliminativist paraphrase — reduce the hole to a perforated host, the border to an agreement-about-a-longitude — and check whether any fact is lost. The analyst reasons from a surviving fact that bearer-talk cannot capture to the necessity of admitting the entity as first-class. Where such a fact survives the paraphrase, first-class admission is forced (the fact can be stated at all only of the immaterial entity); where the paraphrase loses nothing, elimination suffices. This single test is applied uniformly across holes, borders, and jurisdictions rather than adjudicating each separately, so one loss-check settles the whole family's ontological status.
Interventionist / system-design (name the modeling choice and predict its cost): the move the category licenses for a system — a top-level ontology, a geographic or legal model — is to admit the immaterial entity as a bearer of predication, change, and causal or legal relation. The prediction is a recurring-cost comparison: admit the category and the system can predicate of, track change in, and assign relations to all such entities uniformly (the hole is round, the border shifted northward, the jurisdiction expanded and now governs); refuse it and the system pays the recurring cost of paraphrasing every such claim back into talk of hosts. The interventionist reasoning is therefore to weigh first-class admission against eliminativist paraphrase by the translation-loss result, predicting that where loss is real the paraphrase route will be forced into ever-more-strained host-talk to recover facts that belong to the immaterial entity.
Boundary-drawing (what the category covers and where it stops): the concept draws its line by individuation mode — it admits as immaterial spatial entities exactly those particulars fixed relationally (relation to bearers) rather than constitutively, and it bounds itself against the merely material object it depends on. It also marks the live alternative as a coherent competing commitment: eliminativism is not a confusion but a rival ontology, and the category is distinguished precisely by its claim that the translation loss is real. The analyst thus treats the first-class/eliminativist choice as a genuine decision to be made on the loss-test rather than a fact to be read off, and predicts that communities modeling space (philosophy, GIS, law) will diverge in their commitment while applying the same individuation and loss diagnostics to reach it.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within spatial ontology and across the spatial substrates that share its constitution-type, the immaterial-spatial-entity category transfers as a working analytic, not merely as a label. The two diagnostics it makes askable — is this particular individuated constitutively or relationally? and does eliminating it into bearer-talk lose a fact? — and the first-class/eliminativist decision they settle, carry intact wherever spatial particulars are fixed by the arrangement or absence of material bearers rather than by their own substance. In formal and metaphysical ontology (Casati–Varzi on holes, Smith on boundaries and sites, BFO's material/immaterial split) the category is the home machinery. In geography and cartography it applies literally to borders, watersheds, maritime zones, and ecological regions — a watershed's divide is individuated by the terrain it separates, a treaty boundary by the landmarks its geodesic is fixed against, and each has a revision history distinct from the histories of what it bounds. These are not analogies: each is a genuine spatial particular meeting the relational-individuation precondition, so the same individuation and loss diagnostics decide its ontological status by one uniform procedure rather than a bespoke ruling per case.
Beyond spatial substrates the transfer changes character, and honesty requires marking both halves. The familiar extension to software and systems architecture — namespaces, scopes, contexts, package boundaries as "immaterial enclosures" — is analogy (case A): these are referential rather than spatial demarcators, with no material bearers whose arrangement-or-absence individuates them and no genuine location in space, so the category's shape is borrowed while its constitution-type (relation to material bearers, individuation by spatial position) is dropped. What does recur across domains is the thinner structural pattern the category instantiates — some demarcators are individuated by relation to what they bound rather than by any constituent substance of their own, and can be admitted as first-class bearers of predication, change, and relation (case B). But that pattern is already carried by the parent primes the entry rests on: the demarcation-between-an-entity-and-its-outside structure (with its bounded entity, demarcation criterion, interaction rules, and governance function) is boundary; admitting a partless yet located individual leans on composition and category. So when the cross-domain lesson is wanted, it should carry those parents — boundary above all — not "immaterial spatial entity" as named; the named category's residual contribution (the specifically spatial admission of absence-with-shape and location-without-fill as types in a top-level ontology, and the insistence that the eliminativist translation loss is real) is spatial-ontology furniture that does not and should not travel out of the spatial substrates where its material-bearer precondition holds (see Structural Core vs. Domain Accent).
Examples¶
Canonical¶
Punch a circular hole through a flat metal plate. Casati and Varzi's Holes and Other Superficialities (1994) uses exactly this case as the discipline's touchstone. The hole exists wherever the metal is absent; it is round, it has a diameter, and its edge is the plate's rim. Now slide the plate a foot to the left across the bench: the hole travels with it. That single diachronic fact — the hole moved — is what the eliminativist paraphrase cannot state. Rewrite "the hole moved" as "the plate is perforated here, and after the slide the plate is perforated there," and you have described two static configurations of metal but lost the claim that one and the same round thing changed location. The surviving fact belongs to the hole, not to the perforated host, which is why Casati and Varzi admit holes as first-class particulars.
Mapped back: The hole's location on the bench is the spatial position; its roundness and diameter are the shape or extent; the metal it sits in is the material bearer, whose absence (not substance) fixes the hole — the relational individuation. Sliding the plate and predicating "moved" of the hole itself is the first-class status; the perforated-plate rewrite is the eliminativist alternative; and the loss of the "moved" fact under that rewrite is the translation-loss test returning a positive result, forcing first-class admission.
Applied / In Practice¶
In Nebraska v. Iowa, 143 U.S. 359 (1892), the U.S. Supreme Court had to fix the boundary between two states after the Missouri River, which the boundary followed, had shifted its course over decades. The Court drew a distinction that treats the boundary as an entity with its own history: where the river migrates gradually by accretion (imperceptible deposition of soil), the boundary moves with the channel; where the river jumps suddenly by avulsion (a flood cutting a new course), the boundary stays on the old bed. The line is thus individuated by the terrain and the manner of the river's change, and it carries a revision history — moved here, held fast there — distinct from the histories of Nebraska and Iowa themselves.
Mapped back: The boundary's course on the ground is the spatial position and the shape or extent; the river channel and its banks are the material bearers, and the accretion/avulsion rule is precisely a specification of the relational individuation (fixed by how the bearers move). Adjudicating that the boundary itself did or did not shift is the first-class status; and the doctrine implicitly runs the translation-loss test — reducing the boundary to "facts about where the water currently is" would lose the legally decisive fact that under avulsion the boundary did not follow the water.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: First-class admission versus eliminativist parsimony (which ontology pays less). Admitting holes, borders, and jurisdictions as entities in their own right buys a system uniform machinery — it can predicate of them, track their change, and assign them causal or legal relations without rewriting each claim. But it inflates the ontological inventory with particulars made of no matter, exactly the population a parsimony-minded metaphysician resists. Eliminativism keeps the inventory lean, admitting only material bearers, yet pays a recurring paraphrase cost: every "the hole moved," "the border shifted," "the jurisdiction governs" must be laboriously rewritten as host-talk. Neither commitment is free, and the framework's own stance — that the translation loss is real — is a bet that the paraphrase cost is not merely tedious but impossible to pay in full. Diagnostic: For the entity at hand, is the greater cost the proliferation of immaterial particulars, or the accumulating strain of paraphrasing every claim about them back into host-talk?
T2: Dependence on bearers versus non-identity with bearers (constituted by yet not made of). The immaterial entity exists only because of its material bearers — no host, no hole; no walls, no room — yet it is emphatically not those bearers, and the whole category turns on holding both at once. Lean too far toward dependence and the entity collapses into "just facts about the host," reviving eliminativism; lean too far toward independence and it floats free as an unhosted spatial ghost, losing the very relational individuation that constitutes it. The category lives in the narrow band where a thing is fixed by its bearers' arrangement-or-absence without being that arrangement. This is a genuine standing tension, not a settled definition, because each concrete case reopens the question of how much of the bearer's history belongs to the entity. Diagnostic: Does this particular carry a history distinct from its bearers (non-identity holds) while ceasing to exist if the bearers are rearranged (dependence holds) — and can both be asserted without contradiction here?
T3: Loss-test decisiveness versus paraphrase escalation (can the eliminativist always recover the fact). The translation-loss test is meant to settle first-class status: attempt the host-paraphrase, and if a fact survives that bearer-talk cannot state, admission is forced. But a determined eliminativist can always enrich the paraphrase — add cross-temporal identity relations over host-configurations, quantify over reference frames — to recover "the hole moved" as a fact about metal-across-time. The framework claims such recovery is either impossible or so strained it concedes the point; the eliminativist claims it is merely more bookkeeping. The test therefore does not mechanically decide the question so much as relocate it to whether the escalating host-talk is a legitimate rephrasing or a covert re-importation of the immaterial entity under disguise. Diagnostic: Does the eliminativist paraphrase that recovers the disputed fact do so with genuinely bearer-only vocabulary, or does it smuggle in cross-time identity of the very entity it claims to eliminate?
T4: Absence-with-shape versus nothing (immaterial without being void). "Immaterial" invites the collapse to "there is nothing there," yet the category insists the hole is round, the room has dimensions, the border shifted northward — positive, predicable features. The tension is that the entity's defining constituent is often precisely an absence of matter (the hole is where the metal is not), and an absence is exactly what naive ontology equates with nonexistence. The framework must therefore treat a specific, located, shaped absence as a positive particular while denying that all absences are entities — there is no entity where merely nothing is specified. Holding the line between a contentful spatial lack and sheer nothingness is delicate and case-sensitive, and getting it wrong either populates the world with a hole for every unoccupied region or empties it of holes entirely. Diagnostic: Is the absence in question shaped, located, and change-tracking (a positive particular), or an unstructured lack that no bearer-arrangement individuates (mere nothing)?
T5: Literal spatial reach versus referential-demarcator analogy (where the category legitimately extends). The individuation-and-loss diagnostics travel intact across every substrate whose particulars are fixed by material bearers and possess genuine location — holes, watersheds, rooms, jurisdictions. But the same shape tempts extension to namespaces, scopes, and package boundaries, which are individuated by what they bound yet have no material bearers and no location in space. The category cuts both ways here: its structural pattern is general enough to seem to cover these, but its constitution-type (relation to material bearers, individuation by spatial position) is exactly what those referential demarcators lack. Treating the software cases as literal members dilutes the material-bearer precondition that gives the category its bite; refusing them entirely can look like arbitrary gatekeeping when the demarcation logic plainly rhymes. Diagnostic: Does the candidate demarcator occupy a genuine spatial position fixed by material bearers, or is it a referential boundary borrowing the shape while lacking both matter and location?
T6: Autonomy versus reduction (its own spatial-ontology category or an instance of boundary). "Immaterial spatial entity" is a canonically studied category with its own furniture — Casati–Varzi's holes, BFO's material/immaterial split, the accretion/avulsion doctrine — and in situ it earns that standing: the specifically spatial admission of absence-with-shape and location-without-fill, plus the insistence that the eliminativist loss is real, is not stated by any thinner concept. Yet what actually travels beyond spatial substrates is the parent it instantiates — boundary (a demarcation individuated by what it bounds rather than by constituent substance, admissible as a first-class bearer of predication and change), leaning on composition and category for the partless-yet-located individual. A namespace and a hole rhyme because both instantiate boundary, not because either is an immaterial spatial entity. The named category is spatial-ontology furniture; its portable cargo already belongs to boundary. Diagnostic: Resolve toward boundary (and composition/category) when asking what carries the lesson out of spatial substrates; toward the named immaterial spatial entity when deciding, in situ, whether a located absence-with-shape earns first-class admission.
Structural–Framed Character¶
The immaterial spatial entity sits in the middle of the structural–framed spectrum — best read as mixed: a philosophical ontological category that straddles observer-free structure and theory-laden apparatus, reaching neither pole. On evaluative_weight it is neutral — the category classifies and admits particulars (holes, rooms, borders) without praising or blaming them; there is no verdict in calling something an immaterial spatial entity, only a metaphysical carving. On human_practice_bound the signal is genuinely mixed, and that is what fixes the placement: many of its instances run observer-free — a hole in a plate is round and moves with the plate whether or not any metaphysician theorizes it, and a watershed's divide is fixed by terrain with no one watching — yet others are constituted by human practice (a jurisdiction, an easement, a treaty border dissolves if the instituting authority is removed), and the category itself — the first-class/eliminativist decision and the translation-loss test that settles it — is a theoretical practice, not something the world performs on its own. On institutional_origin it likewise splits: holes and gaps are facts of spatial arrangement, but the apparatus that admits them as first-class types (Casati–Varzi, Smith's formal ontology, BFO's material/immaterial split) is a philosophical tradition's artifact, not a fact of nature. On vocab_travels it scores low: absence-with-shape, relational individuation, the eliminativist paraphrase, first-class admission — the operative vocabulary is spatial-ontology furniture and does not float free. And on import_vs_recognize the transfer is bimodal — within spatial substrates (geography, architecture, law, GIS) the individuation-and-loss diagnostics apply literally as recognition, but the extension to namespaces, scopes, and package boundaries is analogy, borrowing the shape while lacking the material-bearer precondition, and is carried by boundary.
The one portable structural skeleton is boundary — a demarcation individuated by what it bounds rather than by constituent substance, admissible as a first-class bearer of predication and change — leaning on composition and category for the partless-yet-located individual. That skeleton is genuinely substrate-independent, which is why a namespace and a hole rhyme. But it does not pull the category toward the structural pole, because boundary is exactly what the immaterial spatial entity instantiates from its umbrella, not what makes "immaterial spatial entity" itself travel: the cross-domain reach belongs to boundary, while the specifically spatial admission of absence-with-shape and location-without-fill, and the insistence that the eliminativist translation loss is real, stay home in the spatial substrates where the material-bearer precondition holds. Its character: an evaluatively neutral spatial-ontology category, part observer-free structure and part theory-laden and practice-bound apparatus, structural only in the boundary skeleton it borrows from its umbrella and pins to genuine spatial position.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
This section decides why the immaterial spatial entity is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime — why what travels beyond spatial substrates is a thinner parent than the named category.
What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the spatial ontology and a thin relational structure survives: some demarcators are individuated by their relation to what they bound rather than by any constituent substance of their own, and can be admitted as first-class bearers of predication, change, and relation — or paraphrased away, if doing so loses no fact. The portable pieces are abstract: a bounded thing fixed relationally rather than constitutively, a coherent choice between admitting it as an entity and eliminating it into talk of what it bounds, and a loss-test that decides between them. This skeleton is genuinely substrate-portable, which is why the catalog carries it as the parent boundary the entry instantiates — a demarcation individuated by what it bounds rather than by constituent substance, admissible as a first-class bearer of predication and change — leaning on composition and category for the partless-yet-located individual.
