Core Idea

Process philosophy is a family of metaphysical approaches that takes becoming, occurrence, activity, and dynamically organized relations to be ontologically primary. What ordinary description treats as a stable thing is explained as a relatively persistent pattern within ongoing processes, not necessarily as a self-identical substance that merely undergoes external change.

The family includes importantly different systems. Whitehead analyzes reality through actual occasions, prehension, and concrescence; other process metaphysics need not accept those categories. What unites the family is a reversal of explanatory priority: processes do not have to be reduced to changes in independently given things; things, states, and capacities may instead be abstracted from processual organization.

Scope of Application

The abstraction organizes debates about persistence, causation, agency, time, mind, biology, ecology, social organization, and scientific ontology. Process approaches are especially salient for organisms, institutions, storms, flames, conversations, and other entities whose continued identity depends on ongoing activity and exchange.

Application requires care. Calling an object a process should improve its individuation, persistence conditions, causal analysis, or explanatory integration; it should not merely replace a noun with a verb.

Clarity

State which entities are processual, what kind of process is meant, and what bears explanatory priority. Specify how the view accounts for stability, individuation, boundaries, and reidentification. Distinguish an ontological thesis from a useful process-based model and identify which historical system, if any, supplies the technical vocabulary.

Manages Complexity

The abstraction turns apparently static units into temporally extended organizations. It helps explain why maintenance is constitutive, why boundaries can be dynamic achievements, and how micro-events support macro-persistence. It also exposes scale dependence: a stable object at one temporal resolution can be a rapid sequence of transformations at another.

  1. Identify the candidate entity and the processes necessary for its existence or persistence. 2. Ask whether those processes merely affect an antecedently given bearer or constitute it. 3. Specify temporal grain, causal continuity, organization, and boundary conditions. 4. Explain how the pattern survives turnover, interruption, or transformation. 5. Test whether a substance-first account yields equal or better explanatory economy. 6. Track novelty, emergence, and reciprocal relations without presupposing fixed relata.

Knowledge Transfer

The portable pattern is stability as an achievement of organized change. It transfers to autopoiesis, ecological succession, institutional reproduction, distributed computation, identity through material turnover, and maintenance-centered engineering.
