Slippery Slope¶
Flag a consequence-chain argument as fallacious when its inter-step links are held together only by conceivability rather than a demonstrated mechanism, so it blocks a proposal by gesturing at a speculative terminus.
Core Idea¶
The slippery-slope argument claims that an initial step S will, through intermediate steps, inevitably produce an extreme final outcome, so S must be rejected. It is fallacious when the inter-step links are asserted rather than substantiated — held together only by the conceivability of each next step rather than a demonstrated mechanism, rate, or evidential ratchet. The fallacy is the unsupported chain, not the chain-shaped reasoning.
Scope of Application¶
The fallacy lives within argumentation, wherever a consequence-chain argument is advanced for evaluation, and it is parasitic on an argument being made.
- Public-policy debate — "allow X, soon they'll demand Y, then Z," blocking reform without engaging its merits.
- Bioethics — objections to incremental liberalizations of assisted dying or gene editing.
- Legal floodgate reasoning — this ruling will open the door to runaway claims.
- Workplace and parenting rhetoric — "if I let you do this once…," the everyday cascade objection.
- Software and process design — arguments against granting exceptions, sometimes a real ratchet, sometimes asserted.
Clarity¶
Naming the slippery slope locates the defect precisely and keeps the label from over-firing: the chain shape can be sound; only the unsupported chain is fallacious. It supplies one discriminating question — what concretely would cause the second step to follow from the first? — separating genuine causal-chain inference from analogy-by-resemblance drift.
Manages Complexity¶
Endlessly varied cascade arguments across policy, bioethics, and law collapse to a single per-link test applied at each junction rather than to the chain's content. The one parameter tracked is mechanism-presence, link by link; its aggregate reads off a binary verdict — substantiated chain to engage, or unsupported chain to dismiss.

The concept licenses a link-auditing diagnostic (track mechanism-presence, not sequence-presence), a weakest-link condemnation (one unsupported load-bearing link breaks the whole chain), a dialectical intervention (shift the burden to "show the mechanism at each link"), and boundary-drawing that rules substantiated chains in bounds so the label does not over-fire.
