  • Reductio ad absurdum. A valid argument form: derive a contradiction or absurdity from a premise by strict logical entailment, thereby refuting the premise. The slippery slope is its mis-application — deriving a bad terminus by a speculative causal chain rather than by entailment. Tell: does each step follow by logical necessity (reductio, a proof) or by an asserted causal transition that might or might not occur (slippery slope, a cascade)? Necessity versus mere conceivability is the divide.
  • The legitimate chain-of-consequences argument (the non-fallacious cousin). Tell: is the worst case reached by an anxious leap in expectation (catastrophizing) or asserted through a step-by-step causal chain (slippery slope)? One is an emotion-driven forecast; the other an argument structure.
