Calibration Drift & Vantage-Limited Perception

Primes about a fitted rule, model, or perceiver whose calibration or vantage point silently stops matching the world: rules that degrade as the underlying distribution drifts, extrapolation beyond the sampled regime, and structural blind spots such as invisible affordances and vantage-induced omission.

  • Calibrated Rule versus Moving World — A rule, model, or policy fitted to a past distribution of the world degrades as the world it was calibrated on drifts away from that distribution.
  • Calibration Anomaly — A quantitative theory-vs-observation gap that survives noise and measurement error and constrains which assumption is wrong.
  • Efference Copy — Routing an internal copy of a command to the perceiver so self-caused effects can be predicted and subtracted, leaving only the world-caused remainder.
  • Extrapolation Beyond Sampled Regime — A calibrated apparatus is deployed against inputs outside the regime its calibration was established in, while continuing to report the same confidence indicators it would report inside the regime, so its own self-reporting is structurally blind to the regime exit.
  • Invisible Affordance — A capability, right, or action-possibility genuinely exists in a system, but the surfaces a prospective user reliably samples carry no signal of its existence, so the user's effective option-set excludes it despite its being real and available.
  • Vantage-Induced Omission — An apparatus's structural vantage makes some regions of a landscape reachable and others constitutively invisible, so its output is mistaken for the landscape rather than the landscape-restricted-to-its-vantage.
