"We're just not comfortable with this" is a sentence that hides at least four different objections, and treating it as one thing is how a valued goal stays stuck. Barrier Decomposition takes the aversive side of a mixed-valence goal and sorts it into typed categories — downside risk, effort load, capability doubt, loss of control, identity threat, social exposure, uncertainty — so that each driver can be routed to its correct response rather than argued with as a lump. How it works

  • Stop at the routing table. Decomposition hands off; it does not itself preserve value, design the safeguard, or choose the next step.

Tuning parameters

  • Bin granularity — a coarse six-bin scheme is fast and legible; a fine sub-typed scheme (e.g., splitting "social exposure" into peer, superior, and public) catches subtler drivers but risks over-fitting and analysis drag.
  • Dominant-bin vs. multi-tag — forcing one bin per objection keeps the map clean and decisive; allowing multi-tags is more faithful but blurs the routing.
  • Disposition strictness — how readily a driver is labeled "modifiable" versus "legitimate." Set it loose and you launder real risks into friction; set it tight and you preserve avoidance.
  • Who sorts — self-sort surfaces felt drivers honestly but is blind to the sorter's own identity bin; facilitator-sort is more neutral but can miss private meaning drivers.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it kills two of the archetype's worst failure modes at once: single-driver collapse (reducing a mixed goal to "it's too risky") and avoidance dismissal (waving all resistance away as irrationality). By naming identity and social drivers as their own categories, it makes discussable the concerns people are least likely to volunteer.
