Pros/Cons Mapping¶
Mapping tool — instantiates Approach–Avoidance Decomposition
Puts the pull and the resistance of a mixed-valence goal side by side in one view, so a decision that felt like a single yes/no becomes two visible columns.
The oscillation that stalls an ambivalent goal comes partly from never seeing both sides at once — the attraction is vivid when you lean in, the aversion is vivid when you pull back, and they trade places in the mind faster than either can be examined. Pros/Cons Mapping freezes both sides in a single frame: it lays the approach drivers (why the goal pulls) beside the avoidance drivers (why the same goal pushes back) so they can be held in view together. Its defining feature is not the list — anyone can list — but the juxtaposition: the deliberate side-by-side layout that converts "I want this, but…" into a picture where the "want" and the "but" are visibly about the same object. It is the archetype's front door, the cheapest possible way to make mixed valence explicit, and it stops exactly there: it surfaces the two sides but does not sort, reduce, safeguard, or decide.
Example¶
Someone is weighing whether to move across the country so their partner can take a career-defining job. In their head it has been a week of whiplash — thrilled at dinner, dread by morning — and no progress. They sit down and build the map. The approach column fills first: supporting a partner they love, a lower cost of living, a chance to leave a job they've outgrown, proximity to mountains they've always wanted. Then, in a parallel column and about the very same move, the avoidance column: leaving a close friend group, a fragile job market in their own field, the identity jolt of being "the trailing partner," and the sheer logistics of uprooting.
Laid side by side, the map does one quiet, decisive thing: it shows that the person is not for or against the move — they are both, about the same choice, and the two columns are not even the same kind of thing (love and cost of living on one side; belonging and career risk on the other). That single view ends the whiplash. It doesn't decide anything — but it hands a clean, honest starting picture to whatever comes next, whether that's sorting the fears or designing a smaller first step.
How it works¶
- Name one goal, neutrally. A single, non-loaded statement of the option so both columns are unmistakably about the same object.
- Fill the approach column. Everything that makes the goal attractive — value, benefit, meaning, opportunity — stated as pulls, not as arguments.
- Fill the avoidance column in parallel. Everything about that same goal that pushes back, captured as information rather than as objections to be defeated.
- Read them together, not against each other. The output is the two-column view itself — the map — not a tally. Counting items or crossing them off is explicitly out of scope.
Tuning parameters¶
- Column symmetry — whether you force equal effort on both sides. Deliberately drawing out the thinner column resists the natural bias toward whichever side you already lean.
- Grain — a few big items keeps it legible; many fine items is more complete but invites treating the longer column as the "winner."
- Weighting on or off — leaving items unweighted keeps the map honest as a picture; adding weights starts turning it into a scoring model, which is a different, heavier tool.
- Solo vs. shared — one person's map surfaces private drivers; a shared map surfaces where two people's pulls and fears actually differ.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is speed and honesty: in minutes it converts fused ambivalence into an explicit, inspectable object, and it makes visible that support for a goal and resistance to its path can coexist in one head or one room. The lineage is old and respectable — Benjamin Franklin described exactly this two-column "moral algebra" in a 1772 letter to Joseph Priestley[1] — which is both its credibility and its trap.
The failure mode is treating the map as a verdict. A pros/cons list has no built-in way to weight, so the naïve reader lets the longer column win — and since avoidance items are easier to enumerate than diffuse benefits, the tool quietly biases toward inaction. The classic misuse is padding one column to manufacture a decision already made. And on its own it does none of the archetype's real work: it neither classifies which fears are legitimate nor preserves the core value nor defines a step. The guarding discipline is to treat the map strictly as a starting picture and hand it forward — to sorting, redesign, or a bounded step — rather than reading a decision off the column lengths.

It stops at surfacing: it does not reduce aversion, add safeguards, or set a commitment step — those are Path Redesign Workshop, Risk Safeguard Design, and Pilot with Exit Criteria.
