When a goal's aversion is driven by the size of the first required commitment, forcing an all-or-nothing choice makes the avoidance worse, not better. Graduated Commitment Path is the method of dissolving that by ordering — arranging action as a rising sequence of exposures, each just past the last, so the aversive side is metabolized in tolerable doses rather than one overwhelming leap. Its defining move is graduated exposure with scaffolding: each rung deliberately lowers aversion by being only slightly harder than the one before, and each is propped by whatever support makes it survivable. This is a sequencing discipline, not an artifact and not a safety design — it says nothing about what to write down or what protections to install; it decides the order and spacing of exposure so that a goal too frightening to commit to whole becomes a series of steps each of which is not.

Example

A songwriter has a drawer of original songs and a private wish to perform them, but the thought of a real audience is a wall. The value is obvious to her; the aversion — being judged on the most personal thing she makes — is exactly proportional to how public the first exposure would be. Graduated Commitment Path builds the ramp. Rung one: play one song for a single trusted friend in her kitchen. Rung two: an open-mic slot on a slow weeknight, three songs, a supportive friend in the room. Rung three: an opening set for a local act she knows. Rung four: her own billed show.

The spacing is the point. Each rung is only a little more exposing than the last, so the aversion at each step is a dose she can actually swallow, and support is written into every one — the friend in the kitchen, the ally at the open mic, the known headliner. By the time the billed show arrives, the thing that was a wall has become the next small step on a path she's already been walking. What made it work was never a pep talk about courage; it was that no single rung ever asked for the whole leap.

How it works

  • Anchor the ends. Fix the too-big target commitment and a first step so small it is almost trivially tolerable; the method lives in the interval between them.
  • Space by aversion, not by logic. Order rungs so each raises exposure just enough to be a stretch and not a wall — the gap between rungs is tuned to felt aversion, not to task convenience.
  • Scaffold every rung. Attach the support each step needs to be survivable (a person, a rehearsal, a fallback presence). Support is part of the rung, not an optional extra.
  • Advance on tolerability. Move up when the current rung has stopped being frightening — the signal to climb is that aversion has fallen, not that a calendar date arrived.

Tuning parameters

  • Step size — small gaps make each rung easy but stretch the path long (and risk never testing the real goal); big gaps move fast but reintroduce the wall. This is the master dial.
  • Support intensity — heavy scaffolding makes early rungs painless but can become a crutch the later rungs never wean off; light scaffolding builds independence but raises the chance a rung is abandoned.
  • Advance trigger — aversion-based advancement is faithful but can stall in comfort; time-boxed advancement keeps momentum but can push someone up before the current rung has actually softened.
  • Path length — more rungs lower per-step aversion but risk fatigue and drift; fewer rungs stay crisp but ask more of each leap.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is precisely for goals whose aversion scales with commitment size: by never presenting the whole leap, it keeps a valued goal reachable that a single required jump would have made permanently avoided, and the falling aversion at each rung is real evidence the path is working. It pairs naturally with support because a scaffolded small step is one almost anyone can take.
