A Claim Status Labeling Standard is the portable marking convention of the archetype: it fixes a controlled vocabulary of epistemic modes and specifies exactly how each is rendered and stored so that a statement's mode travels with it. Its distinguishing idea is persistence through transport. The label is attached to the individual statement — not the paragraph, not the document — and it is engineered to survive copying, quoting, summarizing, and syndication, so that a claim marked "alleged" cannot silently arrive downstream as a bald assertion. It does not decide what mode a statement is in, does not enforce what may be done with it, and is not itself a document; it is the reusable standard that keeps the mode legible wherever the statement goes.

Example

An investigative newsroom adopts a house standard for claim status. Every consequential assertion in a story carries an inline marker and a matching machine-readable tag in the content system: [confirmed], [alleged], [estimated], [our assessment], [open question]. A sentence like "the minister's brother received the contract" may not run bare — it must be tagged [confirmed: two independent documents] or [alleged: single anonymous source]. The rendering spec says a confirmed claim reads plainly, an alleged claim is prefixed and attributed, an assessment is set off as the outlet's own inference. Crucially, the tags are stored as structured metadata, so when the piece is syndicated or aggregated, the status rides along; a partner outlet that ingests the feed cannot quietly upgrade an [alleged] line into settled fact without stripping a visible tag. The standard is what stops the story's epistemic texture from flattening into uniform assertion the moment it leaves the building.

How it works

The standard has three parts. A controlled vocabulary names the local set of modes (and only those — a label outside the list is invalid). A rendering specification says how each mode appears to a human reader (prefix, styling, attribution form) and how it is stored as metadata for machines. A persistence rule binds the label to the statement rather than its container and requires it to be preserved through copy, quote, and summary. The standard's whole engineering effort goes into that last part: a mode that detaches in transit is worthless, so the label must be as sticky as the words it qualifies.

Tuning parameters

  • Vocabulary size — a handful of coarse modes versus a fine-grained set. Fewer labels are learnable and consistently applied; more labels capture nuance but invite inconsistency and reader fatigue.
  • Visibility — whether labels are internal metadata only, reader-facing marks, or both. Public labels change how audiences read; hidden metadata governs downstream tooling without cluttering prose.
  • Rendering intrusiveness — how loudly each mode is shown, from a subtle icon to an unmissable banner.
  • Default for the unmarked — whether an unlabeled statement is treated as unmarked (fail-open) or as unverified until tagged (fail-closed). Fail-closed forces discipline but slows drafting.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is exactly its persistence: because the mode is welded to the statement and carried as metadata, a claim cannot be laundered into fact merely by being copied into a new context. It is the same instinct as the analyst's words of estimative probability — a fixed lexicon so that "likely" and "we assess" mean the same, checkable thing every time.[n1]

Its failure mode is the archetype's flagship: label without license. A team can tag everything meticulously and still change nothing about how a [hypothesis] is used — cited, relied on, built upon exactly as a fact would be — at which point the labels are decoration. Over-labeling has the opposite pathology: so many marks that readers stop seeing any of them. The guarding discipline is to pair the standard with something that acts on the labels — a review pass or an operation rule — and to accept that a status marker which changes no one's behavior is cosmetic, however consistent.

How it implements the components

  • epistemic_mode_taxonomy — it defines the local controlled vocabulary of modes that the labels name, drawing the line between valid statuses and invalid ones.
  • communication_label_standard — it is this component: the rendering, metadata, and persistence rules that keep a mode attached to its statement through communication, summarization, and reuse.

It does not decompose a document into an inventory of propositions (propositional_unit_inventory) or serve as the artifact where decision-makers ratify modes before acting (stakeholder_mode_review) — that is Decision Memo Epistemic-Mode Section, its nearest twin: the standard is a reusable convention any statement carries anywhere, whereas the memo section sorts one specific argument at the point of authorizing action.
