Mode-Operation Matrix¶
Reference matrix — instantiates Propositional Mode Governance
A table mapping each epistemic mode to allowed, required, discouraged, and forbidden operations.
A Mode-Operation Matrix is the rulebook of the archetype: a table whose rows are epistemic modes and whose cells state, for each mode, which operations are allowed, required, discouraged, or forbidden. Its distinguishing idea is that it is declarative reference — the single authoritative place the licensing rules live, so that anyone can look up what may be done with a proposition given its mode, and every other mechanism can point at one shared source instead of improvising. It defines the rules; it does not enforce them, detect their violation, or move propositions between modes. Turn its cells into the four-way grammar of licence — may, must, better-not, must-not — and a vague norm like "don't overclaim" becomes a checkable rule per mode.
Example¶
A litigation team codifies a mode-operation matrix for legal propositions, because "you can't cite that for that" is exactly the kind of rule juniors get wrong. The rows are modes a legal statement can occupy: binding precedent (a court's holding), persuasive authority, dicta, statute, a factual finding, a litigant's contention, and a working hypothesis about how the court will rule. The columns are operations: cite as controlling, rely on in the brief, argue against, flag as unsettled, treat as established. The cells fill in: a holding may be cited as controlling within the jurisdiction; dicta may inform but must not be cited as binding; a contention may be argued but may not be relied on as established; a hypothesis about the court's leaning may guide strategy but must never appear in the brief as a statement of law. A first-year associate consults the matrix and learns, without a partner's red pen, that quoting a footnote's dicta as though it were the holding is forbidden[1].
How it works¶
The matrix is built on two axes. The rows enumerate the local taxonomy of modes — and by fixing that list, the matrix also fixes what counts as a recognized mode at all. The columns enumerate the operations that matter in the domain: relying, citing, testing, challenging, communicating, deriving, deciding. Each cell marks the licence — allowed, required, discouraged, forbidden — for that operation on that mode. The result is static and declarative by design: it is the definition of licence, meant to be looked up and referenced, so that a linter can check against it, a promotion gate can cite it, and a memo can sort against it, all pointing at the same rules rather than each carrying private ones.
Tuning parameters¶
- Operation granularity — how finely the columns slice what one can "do" with a proposition. Finer columns are precise but push the table toward unusable size.
- Cell vocabulary — a binary allowed/forbidden versus the four-level allowed/required/discouraged/forbidden. Four levels capture "you may but shouldn't"; binary is blunter but easier to apply.
- Mode coverage — how many modes get their own row versus being collapsed together. More rows capture real distinctions; too many make the table a reference no one reads.
- Strictness calibration — how much of the table is forbidden versus merely discouraged. A permissive matrix rarely bites; a draconian one gets ignored or gamed.
- Context conditioning — whether the licences shift with decision stakes (stricter near high-stakes actions) or stay fixed.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it turns an implicit norm into an explicit, consultable rule and gives every other mechanism a common referent — the difference between "use good judgment" and "here is exactly what a conjecture may and may not do." Its failure mode is that a matrix nobody consults is wall art: writing "forbidden" in a cell changes no behavior on its own, and a team that mistakes the definition of a rule for its enforcement gains false assurance while misuse continues unchecked. Over-fine matrices collapse under their own size and stop being consulted at all. The guarding discipline is to pair it with detection and review — the rulebook needs a reader who acts — and to keep it small enough that people actually look things up. The matrix defines which operations are forbidden; it performs no detection of whether anyone is breaking them.
How it implements the components¶
epistemic_mode_taxonomy— its rows enumerate and fix the local set of modes the whole scheme recognizes; a mode absent from the table is not a governed mode.licensed_operation_matrix— it is this component: the mode-by-operation table of what each mode may, must, should-not, or must-not do.
It does not detect or flag violations of its own rules (misuse_and_drift_guardrail) — that is Epistemic Mode Linter, its nearest twin: the matrix states what each mode may do, whereas the linter finds where a proposition is actually used against that rule. Nor does it record why any particular proposition sits in its mode (mode_assignment_basis), which is Epistemic Status Ledger.
