Contradiction Resolution Workshop

Ritual — instantiates Independent Evidence Triangulation

A facilitated session that takes a specific disagreement between streams and tests whether it comes from definition, timing, sampling, incentives, transformation, or real context dependence.

When two streams contradict each other, the tempting moves are to average them, to trust the bigger dataset, or to quietly drop the awkward one — all of which throw away the most valuable thing triangulation produces. The Contradiction Resolution Workshop is the recurring, facilitated ritual that refuses those shortcuts. It takes one live disagreement and walks it through a fixed diagnostic sequence, asking why the streams disagree before deciding what to do about it, and it ends every case with a disposition on the record. Its defining trait is that it treats a contradiction as a question with a knowable answer — a definition mismatch, a timing lag, a sampling difference, an incentive, a transformation error, or a genuine boundary in the world — rather than as noise to be smoothed over.

Example

A contract manufacturer builds circuit boards, and two measurements of the same production run disagree. The in-line optical inspector reports a solder-defect rate of about 2%; the customer's incoming-goods lab reports closer to 6%. Before anyone reworks a line or writes an angry email, quality engineering convenes the workshop with both datasets and a facilitator whose job is to keep the room on the diagnostic, not on blame.

They work the sequence. Definition: do both call the same thing a "defect"? — the customer counts cosmetic voids the in-line system ignores. Timing: were the boards measured before or after the reflow touch-up step? — the customer measured later. Sampling: the inspector sees every board; the lab sees a small pulled sample. By the end the "contradiction" has resolved into two real findings: a definition gap worth roughly two points, and a genuine post-reflow defect the in-line system is blind to worth the rest. Nothing was averaged. The disposition is logged, and because it revealed a blind spot in the in-line system, it trips a trigger to re-check every run measured only by that inspector.

How it works

  • Admit one contradiction at a time. The unit of work is a specific, material disagreement, escalated because it could change the decision — not a general "the numbers look off."
  • Run the fixed causal ladder. Definition → timing → population/sampling → transformation → incentives → residual context dependence, in that order, so cheap explanations are ruled out before exotic ones are entertained.
  • Assign a disposition, not a verdict. Every case exits labelled: explained artifact, valid context boundary, stream failure, unresolved uncertainty, or claim revision.
  • Fire an update trigger when the finding reaches past this case — when the resolution implies other runs, streams, or conclusions now need re-checking.

Tuning parameters

  • Escalation threshold — how large a divergence earns a workshop. Set low and the ritual drowns in trivia; set high and real boundary-revealing conflicts get averaged away.
  • Ladder depth — how many rungs must be excluded before "genuine context dependence" is accepted as the answer. Deeper is more rigorous but slower.
  • Facilitation independence — whether the facilitator has a stake in either stream. A neutral chair keeps the session diagnostic rather than adversarial.
  • Disposition granularity — how finely a single contradiction may be split into multiple co-existing causes (the example split one gap into two).

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it converts triangulation's most uncomfortable output — disagreement — into its most informative one: blind spots, hidden definition drift, and real boundaries in the phenomenon surface here or nowhere. The fixed ladder is a close cousin of structured cause analysis;[n1] it keeps a room from leaping to the interesting explanation before excluding the boring one.

Its failure mode is that a facilitated room is a social setting, and social settings resolve toward closure. A senior participant who wants the contradiction to be a measurement error can steer the ladder to stop early, and the ritual can become theater that ratifies a preferred disposition. It also cannot manufacture data it does not have; some contradictions are honestly unresolved and must exit labelled that way. The guarding discipline is to require an explicit disposition on every case — "unresolved" being a legitimate one — and to log the reasoning so a later reviewer can reopen a resolution that was really just fatigue.

How it implements the components

  • contradiction_investigation_path — it is the routed investigation: a live disagreement enters, the fixed definition/timing/sampling/transformation/incentive/context ladder is applied, and a diagnosed cause exits.
  • review_and_update_trigger — when a resolution implies other streams or prior conclusions are now suspect, the workshop fires the event that reopens them rather than closing the book on one case.

It does not set the precommitted scale that decides what counts as material disagreement in the first place — that convergence_and_divergence_rule is Convergence–Divergence Rubric's — and it neither maps shared lineage (dependency_and_common_cause_map, Source Dependency Graph) nor issues the final confidence_calibration_statement (Confidence Update Worksheet).

Editorial Notes

Form Classification

Form family: Communication, Facilitation & Learning

Rationale: A facilitator convenes participants around one material disagreement, walks a shared causal ladder, assigns a disposition, and coordinates any broader update, so its operative form is a participatory sensemaking workshop.

Nearest alternative: Assessment, Review & Assurance — The session classifies the contradiction, but jointly testing meanings and contexts through facilitated interaction rather than an independent reviewer produces the resolution.

Review outcome: Adjudicated after independent review; high confidence.

Origin Attribution

Primary origin: Ethnography & Qualitative Methods

Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis

Present-day reach: Multi-domain

Rationale: Qualitative triangulation cohered treating disagreement between evidence streams as diagnostic of definitions, sampling, timing, transformation, or context rather than averaging it away.

Related originating lineages:

Review resolution: Both reviewers agree on facilitated qualitative inquiry and organizational practice. The source also makes evidence-strength and contradiction classification explicit, retaining statistics_experimental_design as a formative methodological input rather than a mere application domain.

Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.

Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; medium confidence.

[n1] The Ishikawa (fishbone / cause-and-effect) diagram groups candidate causes of a discrepancy into families so a team works them systematically rather than fixating on the first plausible one. The workshop's fixed ladder plays the same role for a contradiction between evidence streams.
