Triangulation Audit Trail¶

A versioned record linking each conclusion back through the weights, dependency judgments, contradictions, exclusions, challenges, and later updates that produced it.
A confidence judgment that cannot be reconstructed cannot be defended, contested, or safely revised. The Triangulation Audit Trail is the versioned document that keeps the reasoning alive after the fact: for every conclusion it records which streams fed it, what weights and dependency discounts were applied, which contradictions were found and how they were dispositioned, what was excluded and why, what challenges were raised, and — critically — what changed at each later revision. Its defining trait is that it is diachronic and reconstructive: not a snapshot of the current answer but the full, time-ordered chain from observations to conclusion, so a later reviewer can walk backward from any claim to the evidence and judgments that warranted it at the time.
Example¶
A drug-safety team is monitoring whether a widely used medication raises the risk of a rare cardiac event — a signal that could trigger a label change affecting millions of prescriptions. The evidence arrives over months from several streams: spontaneous adverse-event reports, a health-insurance claims analysis, a published cohort study, and the manufacturer's trial re-analysis. The team keeps an audit trail.
Version one records an early "possible signal" conclusion, links it to the adverse-event reports, and notes the explicit discount taken because those reports and one news account trace to the same cluster of hospitals. Version two adds the claims analysis, records the weight it was given, and logs a contradiction: the cohort study saw no effect. The trail captures the disposition — a population difference, not a refutation — with the reasoning attached. When, months later, a larger independent cohort reports a small elevated risk in older patients, the update trigger fires; version four narrows the conclusion to that subgroup and shows its work, so a regulator reviewing the label change can trace exactly why confidence moved, what was set aside, and what dissent remained. Nothing rests on memory; the warrant is reconstructable end to end.
How it works¶
- Every conclusion carries backlinks. A claim in the record points to the contributing streams, the weights and dependency judgments applied, and the contradictions and exclusions that shaped it.
- Judgments are logged, not just results. Why a stream was down-weighted, why a case was excluded, and who challenged what are recorded alongside the number they produced.
- Versions are preserved, not overwritten. Each revision is a new layer; the trail shows what the conclusion was, when, and on what basis, so superseded reasoning stays inspectable.
- Update triggers are entries too. The event that reopened the analysis — new evidence, source drift, a discovered dependency — is recorded with the revision it caused.
Tuning parameters¶
- Granularity — how finely each judgment is logged, from a one-line rationale to a full deliberation record. Finer is more defensible but heavier to maintain.
- Versioning cadence — whether the trail is updated continuously or snapshotted at decision points. Continuous captures more; snapshots are cleaner to read.
- Disclosure scope — how much of the trail is externally visible versus internal, since privacy or legal constraints may restrict disclosure without erasing the record.
- Challenge-log formality — whether dissent is captured as free text or as structured, addressable entries that must be resolved.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is accountability across time: it lets a later reviewer reproduce or contest a confidence update, preserves dissent that a single headline number would erase, and makes revision safe by showing exactly what a change rests on. It is the evidentiary analogue of a chain of custody[n1] — the unbroken, documented lineage that lets a conclusion be trusted precisely because its history can be walked.
Its failure mode is the illusion that documentation is rigor. A meticulous trail can faithfully record a badly reasoned synthesis; completeness of the log says nothing about the soundness of the weights and dispositions it captures. Trails also decay under pressure — the update trigger that never gets logged, the challenge quietly dropped — leaving a record that looks authoritative but has frozen in place. The guarding discipline is to treat the trail as a transparency instrument, not a quality one: it makes reasoning inspectable and revisable, but the actual weighting, dependency, and contradiction judgments must be sound on their own terms, and the update triggers must actually be honored, not merely defined.

It records reasoning but does not perform it: it does not set the weights or issue the confidence_calibration_statement — that is Confidence Update Worksheet's — nor does it map the lineage it references; dependency_and_common_cause_map is Source Dependency Graph's.
