A Delayed Interview Protocol is what you use when the only remaining access to an event is a person's memory of it, and that memory was formed hours, days, or years ago. Its defining commitment is that it treats the account it collects as reconstruction, not observation — a delayed layer that is valuable precisely because it is more complete than the raw trace, and dangerous for exactly the same reason. Where a contemporaneous log captures at the moment, this protocol reaches back across a latency gap it cannot close, and so it spends its discipline not on speed but on two things a memory cannot supply for itself: an honest confidence label on each claim, and an independent source to check it against. It produces a reconstructed account that carries its own epistemic health warning.

Example

An investigative reporter is piecing together who approved a permit that should have been denied. The meeting was eleven months ago; there is no recording. She interviews four people who were in the room. The protocol shapes every step: she asks open-ended questions first ("walk me through the meeting") before any leading ones, to avoid planting details; she records, for each claim, whether the source remembers it directly, inferred it, or is repeating what someone told them; and she never lets a single account stand alone.

One official is certain the approval came "from the top." But when she cross-checks against a contemporaneous email thread and a second attendee's calendar, the timeline does not fit — the "certain" memory has absorbed later gossip. In the published piece she marks which details come from documents written at the time and which come from these delayed interviews, and she flags the disputed approval as reconstructed and contested rather than settling it. The interviews are indispensable — they are the only window into the room — but the protocol keeps their reconstructed, memory-based status visible instead of laundering it into fact.

How it works

  • Free recall before cues. The subject narrates uninterrupted first; specific and potentially leading questions come only afterward, minimizing contamination of the memory by the interviewer.
  • Status tagging per claim. Each statement is recorded with how the subject knows it — direct memory, inference, or hearsay — and how confident they are, so the account arrives pre-stratified.
  • Mandatory corroboration. No claim graduates to "established" on one account; it is checked against an independent source (a document, another witness, a physical trace) whose errors are unlikely to correlate with this one.
  • Provenance of the account itself. When and how the interview was taken is recorded, so the delayed account's own latency is visible in the final record.

Tuning parameters

  • Latency acknowledged — how explicitly the elapsed time is surfaced and weighted. Longer gaps demand heavier confidence discounting and more corroboration.
  • Leading-ness of questioning — open recall versus targeted prompts. Open recall protects against contamination but yields less; targeted prompts fill gaps but risk implanting them.
  • Corroboration threshold — how many, and how independent, the confirming sources must be before a claim is treated as solid. Higher thresholds raise reliability and cost.
  • Confidence resolution — coarse (direct / uncertain) versus graded. Finer labels carry more information but tempt false precision about a fundamentally fuzzy thing.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it recovers the only evidence that survives when nothing was captured live — and, done well, it recovers it with its uncertainty attached rather than as bare assertion. Structured elicitation techniques such as the cognitive interview were developed precisely because unstructured questioning both loses accurate detail and manufactures false detail.[n1]

Its failure mode is the one memory research keeps demonstrating: confident recall is not accurate recall, and a delayed account will smoothly incorporate things the person learned after the event as if they had witnessed them. The classic misuse is leading the witness — asking "the manager approved it, right?" and harvesting a "yes" that the interview itself created. The guarding discipline is the protocol's own core: open recall first, an explicit confidence label on every claim, and independent corroboration before any reconstructed detail is allowed to harden into the record. The protocol's honesty lives in refusing to let a vivid memory outrank a boring document written at the time.
