An Ergonomic Fit and Clearance Trial puts real bodies — or validated surrogates — through the actual tasks a design's dimensions demand: reaching, gripping, passing through, bracing, exerting, under both nominal and edge conditions. Its defining idea is that proportion is validated by measured human performance and recorded exclusion, never by how balanced the drawing looks. Where other tests ask whether a size reads correctly, this one asks whether a person can physically do the thing the size is supposed to allow, and who cannot.
Example¶
A transit agency prototypes the interior of a new low-floor tram. On paper the grab poles at 1,100 mm, the seat pitch, and the 900 mm door aisle all look generous. The trial recruits a deliberately diverse panel: a tall 95th-percentile rider, a wheelchair user, a parent with a stroller, an older rider with limited grip strength, and a commuter wearing thick winter gloves. They board, find seats, brace through a simulated hard stop, and exit under a crush load. The findings contradict the drawing: the wheelchair turning circle fails at the validated envelope; the shortest riders can't reach the upper pole once seated passengers block the lower rail; gloved hands slip on the thin pole diameter. Dimensions are revised — larger pole diameter, a second lower rail, a wider door aisle, one seat removed — and the trial is re-run. Crucially, the exclusions are logged so a later "value engineering" pass cannot quietly reverse them.
How it works¶
- Recruit for the range, not the average — diverse real users or validated anthropometric surrogates spanning the tails and assistive-device users, never a single nominal mannequin.
- Simulate the real conditions — clothing, gloves, equipment, mobility aids, crowding, fatigue, one-handed use.
- Run the actual tasks and measure success, strain, time, and — explicitly — who is excluded and by how much.
- Revise the dimensions and re-run, treating a recorded exclusion as a defect, not a footnote.
Tuning parameters¶
- Percentile coverage — how far into the tails you recruit (5th–95th and beyond, plus assistive devices). Wider coverage catches rare, severe conflicts but costs recruitment effort.
- Condition severity — nominal calm versus worst-credible (crowded, gloved, fatigued, one-handed). Harder conditions surface real hazards but can over-constrain if treated as typical.
- Surrogate fidelity — live users versus mannequins or digital human models. Cheaper surrogates miss improvisation and cumulative strain.
- Exposure duration — a short trial versus sustained use; some strain only appears over time.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is converting "looks roomy" into measured fit plus a documented exclusion list — the only evidence that catches a physical hazard hiding under visual elegance. It is the check that treats accommodation as design evidence rather than late compliance, in the spirit of universal design.[n1]
Its failure mode is the average-body trap: a trial run on typical users, for a short time, misses the tails, cumulative strain, and mobility aids, so a design tuned to the 50th percentile silently excludes the ends of the distribution. The classic misuse is a single able-bodied tester "passing" the design and that pass standing in for everyone. The guarding discipline is to recruit deliberately for the extremes and to record who couldn't complete the task, not just who could.
