1. Overview¶

2. Why This Pattern Exists¶

The choice then fails when content grows, the object is fabricated, a body enters the space, a user zooms, the design moves to another medium, or a material imposes thickness and load.

3. Problem Signature¶

Guardrail. Normalization can erase intentional monumentality or intimacy if every context is forced toward the same apparent size. Monitor accessibility, fit, hierarchy, misinterpretation, structural or production conflict, cross-context regression, override frequency, and the distribution of failure across users and settings.
Scale-Drift and Exception Audit¶
Reviews implemented dimensions, ratio deviations, breakpoints, and outcomes against the controlled proportion system. Use periodically or after major content, device, material, product, or site changes. As a protocol, it requires named inputs, a controlled operating sequence, an evidence output, and a decision owner.
Operating sequence. Sample contexts; compare nominal and actual dimensions; classify exceptions; test outcomes; retire obsolete rules; update tokens, drawings, and guidance. Preserve units, semantic roles, version, context, and the connection to other dimensions. Record both measured relation and experienced outcome where they differ.
Guardrail. An audit that only checks numeric ratios can miss degraded meaning, fit, hierarchy, and accessibility. Monitor accessibility, fit, hierarchy, misinterpretation, structural or production conflict, cross-context regression, override frequency, and the distribution of failure across users and settings.
7. Parameters¶
Reference frame. Body, object, site, viewport, task, neighboring element, and cultural expectation change the meaning of the same dimension. Every calibrated relationship names the frame that makes it valid.
Base module and ratio. A smaller multiplier creates dense, subtle hierarchy; a larger one creates stronger contrast and fewer intermediate roles. Select by content, context, and constraints rather than prestige.
Perceptual encoding. Linear dimension, area, volume, apparent size, weight, contrast, position, and motion do not produce equal perceptual effects. Tune the channel that users actually read.
Viewing and operating distance. Angular size, field of view, lighting, resolution, movement, and posture affect legibility and apparent relation. Near and far conditions often need different rules.
Body range. Population variability, assistive devices, clothing, posture, reach, clearance, strength, and fatigue determine whether a proportion fits real use.
Material and structure. Thickness, span, load, grain, deformation, joinery, tooling, tolerance, assembly, aging, and maintenance constrain feasible dimension families.
Content density. Text length, localization, data volume, image aspect, and optional features can force ratio or configuration changes. Test representative and worst credible content.
Breakpoint count and location. Breakpoints should follow actual discontinuities in task, content, medium, structure, or perception. Excessive breakpoints increase brittleness and drift.
Rounding and tolerance. Fabrication and rendering require discrete increments. Rounding must preserve important relationships and account for accumulated error.
Exception authority. Define who may depart, for what reasons, with what evidence, and how the change propagates through drawings, tokens, models, and documentation.
8. Invariants¶
Relative dimensions remain tied to a named purpose and reference frame. A ratio without an intended perceptual, functional, structural, or expressive outcome cannot justify itself.
Units and dimension types remain explicit. Linear, area, volume, apparent, nominal, and actual sizes are never interchanged without a documented transformation.
Accessibility, required legibility, safe clearance, structural adequacy, and material feasibility form hard floors. Formal harmony cannot waive them.
Semantic roles remain recognizable across context changes even when nominal ratios or configurations change.
Prototypes include target and edge states. A miniature, render, or isolated component preview cannot be the sole validation for embodied or environmental scale.
Exceptions remain visible, bounded, and reversible where possible. Local overrides do not silently become a second sizing system.
Scale drift is observable through implementation and outcome evidence, not only numeric token comparison.
9. Outcomes¶
Immediate outcomes include clearer hierarchy, stronger unity, more deliberate emotional effect, fewer arbitrary dimensions, and faster agreement about why one size relation is preferred. Teams can trace a value to its role, context, constraint, and evidence.
Functional outcomes include improved reach, clearance, grip, reading, navigation, maintenance, fabrication, and structural fit. These require direct testing; aesthetic approval alone cannot demonstrate them.
System outcomes include fewer one-off overrides, more coherent product and component families, more stable responsive behavior, and better translation among model, screen, print, product, building, and site.
Governance outcomes include visible exceptions, controlled breakpoint changes, consistent unit handling, and evidence for revising a module or ratio when context changes. The system can learn without losing identity.
Track unintended outcomes such as exaggerated salience, suppressed necessary content, body exclusion, material waste, overbuilding, deceptive apparent scale, cultural mismatch, and maintenance burden.
10. Tradeoffs¶
Coherence competes with local fit. A strong modular grammar reduces arbitrary work and supports reuse, but edge contexts may need departure. Govern exceptions instead of pretending one formula fits all.
Hierarchy competes with equality of access. Large contrast makes priority obvious while shrinking supporting information or controls. Use multiple cues carefully and protect necessary minimums.
Compactness competes with body diversity, legibility, and repair access. A visibly elegant object can impose hidden strain or exclusion. Treat accommodation as design evidence, not late compliance.
Responsiveness competes with simplicity. Fluid scales and breakpoints preserve outcomes across media but increase code, documentation, testing, and drift risk. Use the fewest transitions that correspond to real discontinuities.
Parametric consistency competes with interpretability. Models coordinate dependent dimensions quickly but can propagate a wrong assumption. Expose constraints, units, and overrides and test boundary outputs.
Monumentality and miniature intimacy compete with resource, safety, truthful judgment, and surrounding context. Expressive scale should be intentional and proportionate to its consequences.
11. Failure Modes¶
Ratio fetishism. A famous or neat ratio substitutes for context and evidence. Treat the ratio as one candidate grammar and compare alternatives against use, perception, accessibility, structure, and material.
Blind uniform scaling. Every dimension is multiplied for a new medium. Preserve semantic roles, introduce breakpoints, and retest legibility, fit, content density, and hierarchy.
Average-body bias. A nominal figure stands in for diverse users. Use ranges, assistive scenarios, adjustment, and representative trials.
Hierarchy overload. Size compounds with position, weight, color, and motion until one element overwhelms context. Compare matched alternatives and reduce redundant salience.
Unit and dimension error. Nominal, actual, linear, area, volume, and apparent size become confused. Control semantics, conversion, precision, tolerance, and source of truth.
Model-to-reality collapse. A screenshot, render, or maquette conceals optics, bodies, material thickness, load, assembly, and aging. Require target-size and environmental evidence.
Breakpoint patchwork. Local fixes accumulate until no common system remains. Tie transitions to explicit discontinuities and audit exception frequency.
Expressive overreach. Monumentality or miniaturization becomes spectacle, intimidation, deception, or hazard. Test meaning with multiple users and viewpoints and preserve safety boundaries.
Scale drift. New content, devices, products, or sites keep nominal tokens while outcomes degrade. Monitor actual implementations and revise the grammar or translation map.
12. Variants¶
Visual-Hierarchy Proportion Calibration makes reading order, importance, and salience the dominant outcomes. It remains within the parent because it still needs ratio, context, prototype, accessibility, and drift controls.
Human-Scale and Ergonomic Fit centers diverse bodies, reach, posture, clearance, and physical use. It strengthens anthropometric and direct-trial evidence without changing the relational calibration logic.
Responsive Cross-Medium Scale Translation centers breakpoints, semantic size roles, reflow, and translation among devices or media. It preserves outcomes rather than nominal multiplication.
Expressive Monumental or Miniature Scale makes deliberate deviation from ordinary body or object scale carry meaning. It requires stronger apparent-scale, interpretation, material, resource, and public-safety review.
These remain variants because each retains the parent’s reference frame, ratio grammar, constraint stack, comparative testing, exception governance, translation, and outcome monitoring.
13. Boundaries and Neighbor Distinctions¶
proportional_response_design maps input magnitude to response intensity. Its accepted record explicitly centers linearity, overreaction, and underreaction and contains no components or mechanisms. It does not own visual, spatial, ergonomic, or dimensional relation despite listing q37 as a source prime.
compositional_attention_design arranges elements so attention, interpretation, and action follow intended structure. Proportion / Scale Calibration may remain a design subfamily under that accepted family anchor, but it is distinct when body scale, dimensional semantics, structural and material feasibility, responsive breakpoints, cross-context translation, and scale drift organize the intervention.
scale_invariance_testing asks whether a rule remains valid after rescaling. This archetype intentionally changes dimensions or configuration to preserve outcomes and records where invariance fails.
effect_size_standardization converts statistical effects into comparable magnitude expressions. It shares reference-frame discipline but not designed physical or perceptual sizing.
geometric_primitives_vocabulary_constraint limits the formal alphabet and permits scaling within a grammar. This archetype governs relative size across any element vocabulary and need not restrict forms.
site_responsive_spatial_abstraction binds an abstract work to one place and already contains scale/proportion as one component. The present archetype supplies the reusable calibration lifecycle that site response can invoke.
material_literalness_foregrounding includes scale–weight–texture calibration to reveal intrinsic material. Here material is one constraint among hierarchy, bodies, structure, medium, translation, and access.
Frozen reconciliation proposed proportion_scale_calibration for merge review toward compositional_attention_design, yet also marks it high-fit, promote-first, and likely to promote. This draft resolves the queue-level decision in favor of a distinct second-wave subfamily with an explicit merge boundary; final catalog placement remains human review.
14. Examples¶
Responsive information system. A publication defines semantic roles for title, heading, body, annotation, image, control, and whitespace. A modular ladder governs ordinary relations, while minimum text and target sizes form hard floors. Small screens trigger reflow and a narrower ratio; wall displays increase viewing-distance compensation. Localization and zoom tests determine the breakpoints.
Public interior. A museum coordinates room portals, signs, labels, cases, seating, and circulation. Body overlays and full-size mockups reveal that the first ratio set fits the drawing but not wheelchair turning, child sightlines, or long-distance reading. The team adjusts roles without abandoning the overall grammar.
Product family. A tool family uses parametric relations among grip, control, housing, battery, fastener, and service opening. Grip and clearance trials, load paths, molding thickness, tolerance, and repair access bound the visual proportions. Exceptions propagate through the controlled model.
Site artwork. An artist enlarges an ordinary object to monumental scale. Multiple sightlines, body relation, shadow, material thickness, structure, navigation, and community interpretation are tested. The exaggeration is retained because it carries meaning and remains safe, not because larger automatically means stronger.
Data display. A visualization encodes magnitude by area. The design converts values to area rather than diameter, tests apparent differences, and provides labels so size supports rather than replaces accurate reading. At small formats the encoding switches to a more legible configuration.
15. Non-Examples¶
Doubling a response because the triggering input doubled is proportional_response_design, even if the mapping uses a scale factor.
Applying the golden ratio to a rectangle without defining context, outcome, constraints, prototypes, exceptions, and translation is a mechanism choice, not the full archetype.
Choosing one larger heading in an otherwise unmanaged document is a local styling decision unless it participates in a reusable hierarchy and scale system.
Converting effects into standard deviations, risk ratios, or common-language magnitudes is effect_size_standardization.
Testing whether a physical or computational rule behaves the same after enlargement is scale_invariance_testing.
Restricting a design to circles, squares, and lines is geometric_primitives_vocabulary_constraint; proportion may support that pattern but does not define its vocabulary.
16. Review and Open Questions¶
Frozen review supports a distinct full draft. The sole direct accepted source is semantically off-scope: proportional_response_design matches intervention intensity to input magnitude and has eight aliases but zero components and zero mechanisms. It cannot govern reference frames, ratio systems, body relation, material or structural limits, viewing conditions, breakpoints, units, multiscale prototypes, accessibility floors, exceptions, translation, or drift.
The accepted compositional_attention_design family anchor is a strong neighbor with nine components and eight mechanisms for layout and perceptual guidance. It does not currently include the full dimensional and embodied lifecycle. Frozen candidate inventory marks proportion_scale_calibration high-fit, promote-first, and likely to promote, while also assigning merge review toward that anchor. The draft preserves the proposed subfamily relation and states a concrete merge test: merge only if the accepted anchor expands to own body scale, dimensional semantics, material and structural feasibility, breakpoints, multiscale testing, translation, and drift.
Six queue-listed related owners cover statistical magnitude, geometric grammar, material emphasis, functional ornament, scale invariance, and site response. Their boundaries demonstrate that q37 is served by fragments rather than a general proportion/scale calibration owner.
Human review should test component and mechanism reuse against the accepted index, especially grids, scale maquettes, parametric modules, dimensional scaling tests, and accessibility checks. It should also review expressive-scale ethics and cross-domain name scope. No proposed prime is introduced; all identity and variant prime references are canonical.
