Example

From the side boxes the rake reads as a crooked collapse, and an actor walking "into the distance" suddenly looks like a giant because the depth cues fight the real geometry. The test also flags a safety problem: the forced perspective makes a downstage step look farther away than it is, a trip risk for performers crossing in low light. The fixes are surgical — adjust the vanishing geometry, add masking that limits the side-box sightline, mark the step underfoot. The exaggeration is kept, because it carries the intended meaning from the seats that matter, with its failure zones documented rather than pretended away.

How it works

  • Map sightlines and separate the privileged viewpoint from peripheral ones.
  • Test from multiple real positions, not just the designer's ideal vantage.

Tuning parameters

  • Privileged-viewpoint tolerance — how many positions the effect must survive versus one hero view. Demanding robustness weakens the strongest illusion; permitting one vantage maximizes drama but multiplies failure zones.
  • Exaggeration magnitude — how far apparent departs from measured. More departure means more impact and more fragility and deception risk.
