Founding-Cohort Composition Audit¶
Audit — instantiates Founding Population Composition and Drift Management
Compares founder composition, effective contribution, gate constraints, and source independence with a declared population or viability reference.
An audit does not measure the founders and it does not select them — it judges them, against a standard stated in advance. Founding-Cohort Composition Audit takes a founder set (and its effective-contribution map, produced elsewhere) and asks one verdict-shaped question: is this foundation broad and independent enough for its declared purpose? Its defining move is the comparison to a justified reference — a viability envelope, a chartered constituency, a coverage requirement — combined with a check that the founders are genuinely independent sources rather than correlated relabelings, and a check on whether the founding gate that produced them is a one-time bottleneck or a still-active exclusion. The output is a pass/gap finding: where the foundation clears its floor, where it falls short, and whether the shortfall is being reproduced by a gate that is still open.
Example¶
A new interdisciplinary climate research institute stands up with eleven founding principal investigators. Before hiring accelerates — and locks in the norms, methods, and collaboration networks the institute will grow by — its board commissions a Founding-Cohort Composition Audit. The declared reference is explicit and defended: to deliver on its charter, the institute needs credible coverage across four sub-disciplines (atmospheric physics, ecology, economics, and data engineering) and independence from any single funding source or home university.
The audit lays the eleven founders against that reference. On headcount it looks healthy — eleven senior scientists. But independence-checking the sources reveals that eight of the eleven trained in the same two departments and seven are funded through one agency; against the four-discipline floor, economics is represented by a single PI with no descendant collaborators yet, and data engineering by none. The audit's finding is not "hire more people" but a specific gap map: the foundation clears the physics/ecology floor, fails the economics/engineering floor, and — critically — the recruitment gate that produced this cohort (referrals through those two departments) is still the active hiring channel, so the shortfall will reproduce unless the gate changes. That finding is what licenses a stratified selection or refresh program; the audit itself only diagnoses.
How it works¶
- Fix the reference first. State and justify the viability or target standard — coverage classes, independence requirements, minimum breadth — before looking at the founders, so the audit cannot be reverse-fitted to whatever cohort exists.
- Consume the contribution map. Take the effective-contribution weighting as input rather than recomputing it; the audit judges influence, it does not measure it.
- Independence-check the sources. Collapse correlated founders (shared training, funder, template) and test the count of genuinely independent lineages against the floor.
- Interrogate the gate. Classify the founding gate as a closed one-time bottleneck or a still-active filter, because a live gate turns a static gap into a reproducing one.
- Report the gap map. Emit where the cohort clears and fails its floor, and whether the gate perpetuates the shortfall.
Tuning parameters¶
- Reference stringency — a bare viability envelope versus a strong representation commitment. Stricter references catch more gaps but risk optimizing toward the wrong external standard.
- Independence resolution — how aggressively correlated founders are collapsed. Fine resolution exposes hidden concentration; coarse resolution avoids over-claiming sameness.
- Gate-status threshold — how much continuing influence a gate must exert to count as "still active" versus historically closed.
- Materiality cutoff — how large a floor shortfall must be before it is reported as a gap rather than noise.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it converts a vague unease ("are our founders too alike?") into a defensible finding tied to a stated purpose, and by separately flagging whether the gate is still open it distinguishes a survivable one-time bottleneck from an exclusion that will keep reproducing. It is the diagnostic that licenses every corrective mechanism downstream, and it guards against drift-blind headcount growth — the failure of reading a larger population as a less concentrated one.
Its central failure mode is wrong-reference optimization: if the reference is an arbitrary external distribution rather than a justified viability or mission standard, the audit will faithfully drive the foundation toward the wrong target and lend it the authority of a passed check.[n1] A tidy pass/fail also invites false confidence over dimensions the reference happened not to name. The guarding discipline is to require the reference to be explicit, justified, and versioned before the comparison runs, and to report which dimensions the reference does not cover rather than implying a clean bill.
How it implements the components¶
target_population_or_viability_reference— the audit's spine: it defines and defends the standard the cohort is measured against.diversity_floor_and_independent_lineage_constraint— it tests the cohort's genuinely independent lineages against a minimum floor, collapsing correlated sources first.founding_gate_definition— it classifies the gate as closed or still-active, which determines whether a gap is static or self-reproducing.
It judges but does not build the founding_composition_and_contribution_map — it consumes that from its nearest twin, Effective Founder Contribution Analysis, which measures effective influence while this audit only compares that measurement to a reference. It also does not run the founder_effect_amplification_model forward — that projection belongs to Counterfactual Origin and Omitted-Founder Probe.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Assessment, Review & Assurance
Rationale: Founding-Cohort Composition Audit operates as a bounded evaluation of existing evidence or work that produces a finding or disposition because it compares founder composition, effective contribution, gate constraints, and source independence with a declared population or viability reference.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Founding-Cohort Composition Audit as 'Compares founder composition, effective contribution, gate constraints, and source independence with a declared population or viability reference', so its operative form is Assessment, Review & Assurance.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Statistics & Experimental Design
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Multi-domain
Rationale: Statistics is primary because the audit asks whether an initial cohort covers the relevant population and whether selection creates durable bias. Biology contributes founder effects, sociology contributes composition and representation, and management contributes team formation; the named audit is encyclopedia synthesis.
Related originating lineages:
- Biology & Ecology — Founder effects and viable founding-population diversity provide the biological lineage of the underlying problem.
- Organizational & Management Science — Auditing founding-team coverage, independence, contribution, and reproducing recruitment gates is chiefly an organizational design and institution-building practice.
- Sociology & Anthropology — Founder composition and institutional reproduction materially shape organizational applications.
Review resolution: Statistics is primary because the audit asks whether an initial cohort covers the relevant population and whether selection creates durable bias. Biology contributes founder effects, sociology contributes composition and representation, and management contributes team formation; the named audit is encyclopedia synthesis.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; high confidence.

Notes¶
[n1] Goodhart's law — "when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure." An audit reference that is convenient rather than justified becomes exactly such a target: the foundation optimizes to pass it, and the passed check masks the mismatch. This is why the reference must be defended on viability/mission grounds before it is used to grade a cohort. ↩
