Decision artifact — instantiates Founding Population Composition and Drift Management
Routes inherited founder traits and gates to preservation, translation, diversification, bounding, migration, or retirement.
Once a composition diagnosis is in hand, someone has to decide what to do with each inherited trait — and the wrong reflex is to treat every origin feature as either sacred or a defect. Legacy Keep / Reinterpret / Sunset Matrix is the decision artifact that assigns each inherited founder trait or gate a fate: keep it as-is (it encodes valuable local adaptation), reinterpret it into a broader principle (the specific rule was contingent but the intent generalizes), or sunset it (it is an exclusionary residue with no live justification). Its defining move is that it is a routing table over traits, not an intervention on the population: it produces per-trait dispositions on paper, each with a rationale and — for keeps — a check that the trait genuinely still carries local adaptation, and each sunset weighed against the diversity floor so retirement doesn't collapse breadth. It is the artifact that lets a population adapt without either erasing its history or freezing it.
Example¶
A university reviews the general-education requirements laid down by its founding faculty in the 1950s — a fixed list of courses every undergraduate must take, unchanged for decades and increasingly at odds with a far broader student body. Rather than scrap the whole core (erasure) or defend it wholesale (fossilization), the curriculum committee builds a Legacy Keep / Reinterpret / Sunset Matrix, one row per inherited requirement.
The two-semester writing sequence is routed keep: its local-adaptation check confirms it still produces the durable writing competence the university is known for. The mandatory Western-canon literature survey is routed reinterpret: the underlying intent — sustained engagement with foundational texts — is preserved and generalized into a "great works across traditions" requirement that widens the source lineages students descend from, satisfying the breadth floor. A founding-era rule requiring a specific dead language, admitted originally because the founding faculty were classicists, has no live justification and narrows rather than broadens; it is routed sunset, with the history recorded rather than denied. The matrix's output is not a new curriculum but a defensible disposition for every inherited element, each with its rationale attached.
How it works¶
- One row per inherited trait or gate. Enumerate the founder-era features under review from the composition diagnosis, each as its own decision.
- Route to a fate. Assign keep, reinterpret, or sunset (with bound/migrate as reinterpret sub-forms), never a blanket policy across all rows.
- Gate every keep on local adaptation. A trait may only be kept if a compatibility/local-adaptation check confirms it still earns its place, not merely that it is old.
- Weigh every sunset against the floor. Before retiring a trait, confirm the retirement doesn't push a diversity or coverage dimension below its minimum.
- Attach a rationale and preserve the history. Each disposition records why, and sunset preserves the historical record rather than erasing it.
Tuning parameters¶
- Keep/sunset bias — how much inherited justification a trait needs to be kept. A conservative bias preserves cohesion and local fit but risks fossilizing exclusion; an aggressive bias modernizes but risks beneficial-legacy erasure.
- Reinterpretation aggressiveness — how far a specific rule may be generalized before it stops being the same trait. Bold reinterpretation widens breadth but can drift from original intent.
- Row granularity — whether traits are routed individually or in bundles. Fine granularity is defensible but slow; coarse routing is fast but blunt.
- Reversibility — whether sunsets are provisional (sunset-with-review) or final.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it refuses the two lazy defaults — treating all inheritance as sacred or all of it as garbage — and forces a per-trait, rationaled judgment that can widen breadth while protecting what genuinely works. Its natural discipline is Chesterton's fence[n1]: do not retire an inherited rule until you can articulate why it was put there, which is exactly what the keep/reinterpret analysis demands before a sunset.
Its central failure mode is beneficial-legacy erasure at one extreme (routing valuable local adaptation to sunset because it is merely old) and gate naturalization at the other (routing an exclusionary residue to keep because it feels foundational). Because it is a paper artifact, it is also prone to becoming ceremonial — filled in and filed without changing anything. The guarding discipline is to make every keep pass an explicit local-adaptation check and every sunset pass a floor check, and to hand the dispositions to an actual intervention rather than treating the completed matrix as the outcome.
