Interpretive Weighting Memo¶
Document — instantiates Contingency-Visibility Across Scales
States on the record how the final account distributes explanatory weight across contingency and structure, agency and constraint, close evidence and aggregate pattern — so the interpreter's thumb on the scale is visible and contestable.
An Interpretive Weighting Memo is the closing written record that states, on the record, how the final account distributes explanatory weight — how much it credits contingency versus structure, agency versus constraint, vivid micro evidence versus aggregate macro pattern — and why. Its defining function is reflexive disclosure: it does not build the micro or macro accounts and does not score branches; it declares the interpreter's weighting choices so a reader can see, and contest, where the explanation leaned. It converts an implicit editorial hand into an explicit, auditable statement of emphasis.
Example¶
A historian finishing a study of a dynasty's collapse writes an Interpretive Weighting Memo before the conclusion is fixed. The micro account is rich: a fatal succession dispute, a poisoning rumor, a general's defection in one campaign season. The macro account is equally strong: fiscal exhaustion, a century of currency debasement, a shifting frontier. The memo states the weighting outright: "This account treats the succession dispute as a genuine hinge — roughly a third of the explanatory weight — but reads it as a trigger acting on a fiscal fragility the macro record shows was already decisive; agency is credited for the timing and form of collapse, structure for its direction and near-inevitability." It names what it is deliberately down-weighting (the poisoning rumor, thin on sources) and flags the reader to where a reasonable interpreter could strike the balance differently.
The memo does not resolve the debate between the "great succession crisis" school and the "long fiscal decline" school; it makes the author's own thumb on the scale visible, so a critic can argue with the weighting instead of guessing at it. That visibility is the entire deliverable.
How it works¶
It is a short structured document with fixed prompts: (1) the focal question (inevitability? responsibility? explanation?); (2) the contingency-versus-structure split, stated as a rough proportion or ranked emphasis with justification; (3) the agency-versus-constraint call for the key actors; (4) an evidence-resolution note — which conclusions rest on close sources and which on aggregate data; (5) declared down-weightings and the reasonable alternative readings. It is written to be read alongside the account, not buried inside it, and — crucially — drafted before the conclusion hardens, so it shapes the verdict rather than decorating one already reached.
Tuning parameters¶
- Weighting granularity — a qualitative lean versus an explicit proportion. Numbers force clarity but risk false precision.
- Reflexivity depth — how much the author interrogates their own priors. Deeper is honest; too deep becomes navel-gazing.
- Alternative-reading breadth — how many rival weightings you concede as reasonable. More is fair-minded; too many is noncommittal.
- Bindingness — whether the memo governs the final text or merely advises it. Binding keeps the account honest to its own declared weights.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the archetype's defense against silent determinism and silent heroism: forcing the weighting into daylight is what lets an inevitability claim or an accountability claim be checked at all.
Its failure mode is that the memo can become a rhetorical shield — a show of even-handedness that actually pre-commits to a conclusion, or a hedge so balanced it says nothing. The classic misuse is writing the memo after the conclusion to retrofit a justification for the weighting the author had already chosen. The guard is to treat the agency–structure problem[n1] as genuinely open at the memo stage — write it before the verdict sets — and to invite a second reader to re-weight the same evidence and record where they would differ.
