Contingency-Visibility Across Scales

A Paired Micro/Macro Case Study is a research method that deliberately analyzes one phenomenon twice — once as a close-grained case narrative and once as an aggregated structural account — and then compares what each resolution makes visible and what each hides. Its defining property is the disciplined pairing: neither account is treated as the "real" one, and the method's product is the comparison itself — an explicit ledger of what the close view revealed that the aggregate erased, and what the aggregate revealed that the case never showed. It is the orchestrating method that the archetype's smaller artifacts serve.

Example

A researcher studies a wave of warehouse strikes. The micro case is one facility: a close narrative of a single walkout — the shift-floor grievance, the informal leaders, the day the crew stopped, the manager's misstep, the vote. The macro account is the sector: aggregated data on wages, turnover, injury rates, and employment across hundreds of warehouses over a decade. Analyzed separately, each is coherent and each is partial. The case makes the walkout look like the contingent product of specific personalities and a specific insult; the aggregate makes it look like the inevitable discharge of sector-wide wage stagnation.

The method's payoff is the comparison ledger. The case shows the timing and form the aggregate cannot — why this warehouse, this week, this leader. The aggregate shows the pressure and prevalence the case cannot — that the conditions were sector-wide and this strike was one of many. The reconciled reading — structural pressure, locally ignited — belongs to neither account alone, and it only becomes sayable because the method forced the two side by side.

How it works

Run two analyses, each to its own standard. (1) Name the frames — the micro unit and the macro population. (2) Build the close case to case-study rigor. (3) Build the aggregate account to statistical or structural rigor. (4) Cross-read: produce an explicit two-column ledger of "visible in case / invisible in aggregate" and the reverse. (5) Write the reconciliation — the reading that honors both. The method's non-negotiable discipline is that step 4 is written down: it is not enough to have both accounts, you must state the gap between them, because that gap is the deliverable.

Tuning parameters

  • Case selection — typical, extreme, or "exceptional normal" unit. Extreme cases are vivid but risk unrepresentativeness; typical cases reconcile more cleanly with the aggregate.
  • Macro breadth — how wide the population and how long the window. Wider stabilizes the pattern but loosens its tie to the case.
  • Symmetry of rigor — equal effort on both accounts, or a lead account. Asymmetry biases the comparison toward the better-built side.
  • Comparison explicitness — a narrative gesture at the gap versus a formal ledger. The formal ledger is the method's whole point.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it is the archetype's flagship: the only mechanism that builds both resolutions to standard and forces their comparison, so it resists anecdotal overreach and deterministic smoothing at the same time.

Its failure mode is sampling on the dependent variable and then generalizing — treating one vivid case as representative of the aggregate, or reading the aggregate as if it explained the case's specifics. The classic misuse is choosing an extreme case because it is dramatic and then quietly presenting it as typical of the population. The guard is the microhistory[n1] tradition's own rule — reducing the scale of observation is a way to test general claims, not to replace them — plus checking the case's representativeness against the aggregate before any generalization is drawn.

How it implements the components

  • scale_frame_pair — the method opens by naming the micro unit and the macro population, the pairing on which everything else rests.
  • micro_event_trace — the close case narrative is a full micro trace built to case-study rigor.
  • macro_pattern_summary — the aggregated account is the structural and statistical summary of the population.
  • cross_scale_reconciliation_rule — the mandatory comparison ledger and the reconciled reading are this rule performed as the method's culminating step.

It does NOT rate or prune the counterfactual branches the pairing surfaces — those are contingency_marker_set and counterfactual_branch_filter, owned by Counterfactual Sensitivity Matrix and Branch-Pruning Protocol; the method builds and compares the two accounts, it does not adjudicate their alternatives.

Editorial Notes

Form Classification

Form family: Analysis, Modeling & Optimization

Rationale: Paired Micro/Macro Case Study operates as an analytical, modeling, inference, comparison, or optimization procedure that derives insight or a solution because it analyzes one phenomenon twice — as a close case narrative and as an aggregated structural account — then produces an explicit ledger of what each resolution reveals and hides.

Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Paired Micro/Macro Case Study as 'Analyzes one phenomenon twice — as a close case narrative and as an aggregated structural account — then produces an explicit ledger of what each resolution reveals and hides', so its operative form is Analysis, Modeling & Optimization.

Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.

Origin Attribution

Primary origin: History & Historiography

Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis

Present-day reach: Multi-domain

Rationale: Paired Micro/Macro Case Study is most directly rooted in history and historiography's source-critical reconstruction of events, testimony, scale, and narrative. The lineage fits its defining practice: Analyzes one phenomenon twice — as a close case narrative and as an aggregated structural account — then produces an explicit ledger of what each resolution reveals and hides.

Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.

Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.

Notes

[n1] Microhistory — associated with Carlo Ginzburg and Giovanni Levi — reduces the scale of observation to a single person, village, or episode not to abandon big questions but to test them: the close case can confirm, complicate, or refute the generalizations that macrohistory asserts. The paired method institutionalizes that dialogue rather than choosing a side.
