A Scale-Shift Review Prompt is a checklist of questions run against a finished or draft analysis to ask what changes when the scale is deliberately shifted — what becomes visible, what goes invisible, what is exaggerated, and what is smoothed. Its defining property is that it is an interrogation instrument, not a produced artifact: it holds no data and draws no chart; it prompts the analyst to re-examine an existing account through a different scale lens and to name the distortions the current scale introduces. It is the lightweight, portable check that catches scale cherry-picking before it hardens into a conclusion.

Example

An environmental team has drafted a report concluding a river basin's fish populations are "stable." Before sign-off they run the Scale-Shift Review Prompt. At what scale is this claim made? — the whole watershed, annual average. What appears one scale finer? — at the tributary-and-season grain, two headwater streams have collapsed while a downstream reach boomed, netting to "stable." What appears one scale coarser? — at the continental scale, this basin sits inside a regional decline the local frame cannot see. What does the current scale exaggerate or smooth? — the watershed-annual frame smooths the tributary collapse into stability and hides the regional trend.

The prompt produces no new data; it produces four flagged distortions and a recommendation to report the claim at the tributary and continental scales too. The "stable" headline survives only with those caveats attached — which is exactly the outcome the review exists to force. A ten-minute checklist changed a misleading conclusion into a defensible one without any new fieldwork.

How it works

A fixed question set is applied to any claim: (1) At what scale — spatial, temporal, actor — is this claim made? (2) What appears if you shift one grain finer? (3) What appears if you shift one grain coarser? (4) What does the current scale exaggerate, and what does it smooth? (5) Would the claim survive at the adjacent scales, or is it scale-dependent? The output is a list of flags and, where a claim proves scale-bound, a required caveat — not a redone analysis. Each answer must cite a concrete thing that appears or vanishes, so the review cannot be satisfied by a reassurance that "other scales were considered."

Tuning parameters

  • Scale axes checked — spatial only, or spatial plus temporal plus actor. More axes catch more distortion but lengthen the review.
  • Shift magnitude — one grain in each direction, or several. Adjacent shifts are cheap; distant shifts catch bigger reframings.
  • Trigger scope — run on headline claims only, or on every inference. Broader is thorough but slows the work.
  • Caveat strictness — whether a scale-dependent claim must be reworded or merely flagged. Strict protects readers; lenient keeps momentum.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it is cheap, fast, and portable, and it catches the single most common scale error — asserting at one scale a claim that only holds there — without building anything at all.

Its failure mode is that a checklist invites box-ticking: the questions get answered pro forma and the review certifies an account it never really stress-tested. The classic misuse is running the prompt to legitimize a chosen scale ("we considered other scales") rather than to genuinely test it. The guard is to treat the modifiable areal unit problem[n1] as the live threat the prompt exists to catch — results really do change with the unit of aggregation — so each answer must cite a concrete thing that appears or vanishes at the shifted scale, never a reassurance that scale "was considered."
