A live board that tracks the signals telling you a juncture's window is opening, closing, or drifting toward lock-in — so timing is read from indicators, not guessed.
A juncture's window is plastic only briefly, and knowing when it is open, closing, or already hardening is often the difference between stewarding a path and mourning one. A Juncture Early-Warning Dashboard converts that timing from a one-time guess into continuously tracked signals: a defined set of indicators, each with a threshold, refreshed on a cadence, each mapped to a window state. Its defining move is to make the window's timing observable — to watch for the drift toward premature lock-in as it happens rather than reconstruct it afterward — and to hand a tripped threshold to whoever decides or pauses. It detects and times; it does not define the paths, make the decision, or enact the intervention.
Example¶
An engineering org spins up an "experimental" internal service framework. As teams adopt it, it quietly hardens into an un-removable dependency — every new service built on it raises the cost of ever leaving. A Juncture Early-Warning Dashboard tracks the signals that reveal how far the window to keep it optional has closed: the number of services depending on it, the share of new services choosing it by default, whether credible alternatives are still in live use, and the estimated cost-to-remove.
When default-adoption crosses a set threshold and cost-to-remove climbs past a drawn line, the dashboard flags that "still swappable" is tipping into "load-bearing." That timing signal tells leadership the decision to formally bless or replace the framework can no longer be deferred — and, coupled to a pause gate, when to freeze new adoption while they decide. The window's state is read off indicators rather than argued from impressions.
How it works¶
What distinguishes the dashboard is that it is a timing detector, not an analysis or a decision. It runs a defined signal set with explicit thresholds, refreshed continuously, and each signal maps to a window state — opening, open, closing, drifting toward lock-in. Its whole job is to surface a change in that state early enough to act on, then route a tripped threshold to a decision review or a pause gate. It watches; the acting happens elsewhere.
Tuning parameters¶
- Signal set — which indicators are tracked; leading indicators warn early but noisily, lagging ones are certain but late.
- Threshold placement — how sensitive each trigger is; tight thresholds warn early with more false alarms, loose ones warn late with more misses.
- Refresh cadence — real-time versus periodic; faster catches a fast-closing window but consumes attention.
- Aggregation — raw signals versus a composite "window state"; a composite is legible but hides which signal actually moved.
- Escalation coupling — whether a tripped threshold merely informs, triggers a review, or auto-fires a pause.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is making window-timing observable, so a closing plastic moment is caught before lock-in rather than lamented after. It is the standing answer to the timing bind at the heart of the archetype: early on, a path is easy to change[1] but its consequences are unclear; later, the consequences are clear but the path is hard to change.
Its failure mode is signal noise: too many indicators produce alert fatigue and get ignored, and lagging indicators confirm lock-in only once it has set. The classic misuse is standing up a dashboard for the appearance of vigilance, with thresholds set so loose they never trip. The discipline is to pre-commit each threshold to a specific response — inform, review, or pause — so a tripped signal forces action rather than a shrug, to favor leading indicators despite their noise, and to revisit threshold placement as the window narrows.

It does not define the paths whose lock-in it watches (that's the Branching-Path Scenario Workshop) or enact the pause when a signal trips (that's the Temporary Moratorium or Pause Gate); it detects and times without deciding or intervening.
