Lineage Traceback Protocol walks each case backwards in time to reconstruct where it came from and how it got there — the actual genealogy of a practice, not a category of risk. Its defining move is historical reconstruction: for every lineage it traces the origin event, the transmission channels (who taught, cited, hired, forked, or forwarded whom), and the dates, then draws the result as a directed map. Two cases that look independent on the surface may collapse into one node once the traceback finds a shared teacher or a common source document; conversely, two that were assumed to be copies may prove to have arisen years apart with no contact. The protocol produces the independence map and the timeline — the raw genealogy the rest of the appraisal reasons over. It is the difference between "these five regions all do it" and "here is the family tree of who did it first and who learned from whom."

Example

An agricultural economist is assessing whether no-till farming's spread across the U.S. Great Plains, the Argentine Pampas, and parts of Australia is convergent evidence that no-till fits dryland grain systems — or just one idea diffusing. She runs a traceback per region. She reconstructs origin events (early adopters, the machinery that made it feasible), then the transmission channels: extension bulletins, equipment dealers, farmer field days, a handful of touring agronomists. Dating each link matters. If the Australian adoption post-dates and cites the American one, and the same seed-drill manufacturer seeded all three, the "three independent arrivals" collapse toward a single diffused lineage.

The output is a directed graph: nodes are regional adoption events, arrows are documented transmission, and a timeline runs beneath it. It shows that two regions share a common origin through the equipment supplier, while a third — reached before that supplier arrived, driven locally by erosion after a drought — sits genuinely apart. That third region is now the one lineage carrying real independent weight, and the traceback is what isolated it.

How it works

  • Anchor each case to an origin event. Name the first documented instance in each lineage and its date, so the sequence has a floor.
  • Trace transmission channels outward. Follow citations, hires, training, vendor relationships, forks, and field-day contacts link by link, recording each as a dated edge.
  • Collapse shared nodes. Where two lineages meet at a common teacher, source, or supplier, merge them — apparent independence dissolves at that junction.
  • Read the timeline for direction. Ordering the origins in time distinguishes "A influenced B" from "B influenced A" and exposes cases too early to be copies.

The protocol reconstructs the genealogy; it does not rate whether the shared sources should downgrade the inference — it hands the map to the audit and the matrix.

Tuning parameters

  • Traceback depth — how many transmission hops back you follow. Deeper tracing finds hidden common origins but costs archival effort and hits missing records.
  • Edge-evidence standard — what counts as a real transmission link (a citation vs. a plausible contact). A loose standard invents diffusion; a strict one may miss quiet copying.
  • Node-merge threshold — how much shared origin collapses two lineages into one. Aggressive merging can erase genuine independence; timid merging inflates the count.
  • Dating resolution — decade, year, or month. Finer resolution settles direction-of-influence disputes but is often unavailable for older or informal practices.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it attacks independence at the root: convergence's entire evidential force rests on lineages being separate discoveries, and only a reconstructed genealogy can show whether they are. It is the appraisal's defense against counting copies as votes — the discipline behind distinguishing independent invention from diffusion, a distinction anthropology has argued over for more than a century.[n1]

Its failure mode is the archive: absence of a documented link is not proof of independence, and a traceback can mistake missing records for no transmission, awarding independence to lineages that simply covered their tracks. The classic misuse is stopping the trace one hop too early, at the point where the lineages still look separate. The guarding discipline is to treat unfound links as unknown rather than absent, to trace until channels are genuinely exhausted, and to mark low-confidence independence explicitly on the map.

How it implements the components

  • lineage_independence_map — the protocol's primary output: a directed genealogy of origins and transmission that shows which cases are separate and where they secretly join.
  • lineage_timing_sequence — dating each origin and edge orders the lineages in time, which is what settles direction of influence and rules out anachronistic "copies."
