Litany-to-System Mapping Session¶
Method — instantiates Causal Layer Reframing
A working method that traces visible symptoms upstream to the recurring systems that keep regenerating them — the first descent, done before worldview or myth work.
Layered reframing has to start somewhere, and the first move is almost always the same: get off the symptoms and onto the machinery that keeps producing them. The Litany-to-System Mapping Session is the method for exactly that first descent. It begins from the visible litany — the incidents, metrics, and complaints — and works upstream, asking of each one, "what recurring arrangement keeps regenerating this?" until the surface list resolves into a small set of structural causes. Its defining move is that it is the shallow-to-mid diagnostic ascent from litany to system, and it deliberately stops there. It does not touch worldview or myth; it does not project futures. Its whole job is to convert a pile of symptoms into an understanding of the system beneath them, cleanly enough to hand off to the deeper or forward-looking work that follows.
Example¶
A regional food bank is alarmed by rising demand and keeps responding the only way it knows — collect more food, add another distribution day. A Litany-to-System Mapping Session reframes the problem before that reflex hardens. First the focal boundary is set: recurring growth in first-time visitors over the past two years, not "hunger" in the abstract. Then the litany is listed plainly — longer queues, more first-time families, seasonal stockouts, a jump in referrals from a single county office. For each symptom the group asks what system regenerates it, and the answers converge: local wage stagnation in the dominant employment sector, a benefits "cliff" where a small raise cancels a larger subsidy, and a referral bottleneck that funnels a whole region through one overwhelmed office.
The session stops there, on purpose. It does not ask what story the community tells about poverty or dignity — that is a later layer's work. But the map it produces already changes the reflex: the recurring driver isn't a food shortage, it's a benefits-cliff structure, which redirects the food bank's attention from collecting more cans toward advocacy on the cliff itself.
How it works¶
- Bound the symptom set. Fix which recurring issue is in scope and over what horizon, so the ascent has a defined starting pile rather than the whole world.
- List the litany concretely. Enumerate the visible symptoms as observable facts — counts, incidents, complaints — resisting the urge to explain them yet.
- Ask "what regenerates this?" per symptom. Trace each symptom upstream to the arrangement that keeps producing it, distinguishing a recurring structure from a one-time trigger or a blame target.
- Converge and stop. Cluster the upstream causes into a small set of systemic drivers and hand off — explicitly declining to proceed into worldview or myth in this session.
Tuning parameters¶
- Ascent depth — how many "why" steps to climb from symptom toward structure. More steps reach deeper systems but risk overshooting into worldview before the group is ready.
- Structure vs. blame discipline — how strictly the session rejects single-culprit answers in favor of recurring arrangements. Strictness yields durable causes but frustrates a group that wants someone to fault.
- Evidence standard — whether each claimed system link needs process-map or data support. Higher standards produce a defensible map at the cost of session speed.
- Convergence threshold — how aggressively many symptoms are collapsed into few drivers. Tight convergence gives a clean handoff but can hide a driver that matters only for a minority of symptoms.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is breaking the symptom-response reflex early and cheaply: it is the fast, structured move that turns "we keep firefighting" into "here is the system lighting the fires." Because it stops cleanly at the system layer, it also makes a disciplined handoff to deeper work possible instead of collapsing every layer into one muddled conversation. It is the applied form of the systems-thinking iceberg model, which reads visible events as the tip of underlying patterns, structures, and — below the waterline — mental models.[n1]
Its failure mode is stopping too shallow and calling it done: a session that reaches "the system" can feel so much deeper than symptom-chasing that the group mistakes it for the whole reframing and never examines the worldview holding the system in place. The mirror risk is surface neglect — treating the litany as beneath attention and losing the measured reality that keeps the deeper analysis honest. The classic misuse is stretching one session to cover all four layers, which produces a shallow smear instead of a clean structural map. The guarding discipline is to name explicitly that this session is the first descent and to schedule the worldview and myth work as separate, deliberate steps.
How it implements the components¶

It does not implement discourse_worldview_frame or myth_metaphor_layer — the deeper interpretive layers are taken up separately, and the forward projection of alternative futures belongs to the Cross-Layer Scenario Comparison, its method twin; this session moves backward from present symptoms to present systems and stops.
