Operational Definition Table

Concept-to-operations table (artifact) — instantiates Sense-Experience Reduction Protocol

Pairs each contested term with the observation procedure that defines it and a label for the claim's resulting semantic status.

An Operational Definition Table is a standing artifact that does one thing the other mechanisms don't: it fixes what a contested term shall mean, by tying it to a specific observation or measurement procedure, and records the term's resulting status. Where a translation rewrites a whole claim into predicted experiences, this table works at the level of the word — "engagement," "poverty," "hardness," "food insecurity" — and stipulates: for the purposes of this work, the term denotes exactly the operation that produces it. Its second column is a semantic status label: fully operationalised, partly operationalised, or not yet reducible to any procedure. The table is the shared dictionary that stops a project from arguing past itself because two people quietly meant different things by the same word.

Example

A public-health agency has to report on food insecurity, but the phrase means little until it is pinned down. An Operational Definition Table fixes it: the term is defined as an affirmative answer to a specified number of items on a standard household survey module (e.g., "in the last 12 months, did you ever cut the size of meals because there wasn't enough money for food?"), scored over a stated reference period. Alongside sit related terms — "very low food security," "marginal food security" — each bound to its own threshold on the same instrument, and each tagged operationalised.

A neighbouring term, nutritional adequacy, gets tagged partly operationalised: it has a procedure (dietary recall) but one whose coverage is contested. And dignity of access, though it matters to the mission, is tagged not yet reducible — no agreed observation defines it. The table doesn't claim these definitions are the true essence of the words; it claims that everyone downstream will use these operations, so that a figure for "food insecurity" means one auditable thing rather than a mood.

How it works

  • Enter the contested term. State the word or phrase that needs a shared meaning before any observation can be gathered.
  • Bind it to an operation. Specify the procedure whose result constitutes the term's value here — a survey score, a threshold, a measured quantity — not a synonym or a paraphrase.
  • Label the semantic status. Mark whether the term is fully operationalised, only partly, or not reducible to any current procedure, so the gaps are visible.
  • Hold it stable and shared. Publish the table as the reference every downstream mechanism uses, and version it so a later change of definition is explicit rather than silent.

Tuning parameters

  • Fidelity vs. tractability — how richly the operation captures the concept versus how easy it is to run. A faithful definition may be costly; a tractable one may hollow the concept out.
  • Coverage — how much of the term's ordinary meaning the operation is meant to capture. Narrow definitions are crisp but risk defining the interesting part away.
  • Status granularity — how many labels the third column allows (a binary defined/undefined, or a graded scale). Finer status is informative but invites hair-splitting.
  • Stipulation strength — whether the definition claims to be the concept or merely to stand in for it here. Overclaiming reifies the operation; underclaiming leaves the term still contestable.
  • Revision policy — how readily a definition is changed. Stable definitions keep figures comparable across time; frequent revision tracks understanding but breaks the series.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is coordination: it makes a shared term mean one auditable thing, so a reported number can be reproduced and disputes move from "what do you mean by X?" to "is the operation for X a good one?" This is the disciplined use of operational definition — treating a concept, for working purposes, as the operations that measure it.[1]

Its besetting error is mistaking the operation for the whole concept — the slide from "we measure intelligence with this test" to "intelligence is this test score," which quietly defines away everything the operation misses (construct underrepresentation). An over-tidy table can lend a hollowed-out definition the authority of a real one, and it is run backwards when the operation is chosen because it yields the convenient number, then dressed up as the term's meaning. The table also only labels status; it does not certify that an "operationalised" term's procedure is valid — that is a Proxy Validity Audit's job. The discipline is to keep the definition explicitly stipulative ("here we mean…"), to preserve what the operation omits, and to distinguish a term that has no operation from one whose operation is merely imperfect.

How it implements the components

  • semantic_status_label — its second column: the label marking each term as fully operationalised, partly operationalised, or not yet reducible to any procedure.

It does not write a claim's experiential conditionals (Counterfactual Conditional Translation), design the survey or measurement procedure itself (Observation Protocol Design), or mark where access to a referent runs out entirely (Access Boundary Annotation, which labels by accessibility rather than by whether a definition exists).

The table uses operational definitions as a practical coordination device while avoiding Bridgman's strong claim that a concept is nothing but its operations, which drops whatever the chosen operation fails to capture.
