Plural Causal Synthesis Review¶
Synthesis review — instantiates Agency / Structure Attribution Balance
Holds several competing causal models open at once, restates the scoped target, and publishes a bounded, versioned synthesis that separates causal contribution from praise and blame.
The Plural Causal Synthesis Review is where the appraisal decides how to talk about what it found — and refuses to collapse it into one cause. It restates the scoped explanatory target, gathers the competing causal models that the evidence mechanisms produced, holds them open with their uncertainty instead of crowning a winner, draws an explicit line between causal contribution and praise or blame, and publishes a dated synthesis with triggers for when it must be reopened. Its defining move is deliberative rather than evidentiary: it generates no new facts about the world, it governs how the assembled facts are integrated, bounded, and released — the discipline that stops a rich analysis from ending in a single tidy villain or hero.
Example¶
A seminar is asked to settle who or what caused the fall of the Roman Republic. The review begins by narrowing the target: not "the decline of Rome," but the collapse of specific republican institutions over a bounded span. Then it lays the competing models side by side rather than choosing one — ambitious commanders exploiting personal armies, structural over-extension and land inequality, the erosion of constitutional norms, the professionalization of the legions — each with its supporting evidence and its acknowledged gaps.
Crucially, it runs a consider-the-opposite pass on whichever model the room favors, forcing the strongest case for a rival before any weighting is fixed.[n1] It then draws the responsibility line in the open: a figure being causally pivotal to the collapse is not the same as being morally blameworthy for it, and the synthesis says so explicitly. What it publishes is a plural, dated account — each model with its support, the evidence that would change the verdict, and the responsibility limits — rather than a name to hang the fall on.
How it works¶
- Restate the scoped target. Re-fix the outcome, stage, comparison, scale, and intended use, so the synthesis answers a precise question and not a slogan.
- Assemble the competing models. Pull the alternative accounts from the evidence, tracing, counterfactual, and comparative mechanisms and array them with their uncertainty.
- Consider the opposite. Deliberately build the strongest case for a rival to the leading model before weighting, as a guard against premature closure.
- Draw the responsibility boundary and version the release. State separately what the causal finding does and does not imply for praise, blame, and liability; publish with dated review triggers for new evidence or consequential reuse.
Tuning parameters¶
- Closure threshold — how much dominance one model needs before the synthesis is allowed to narrow toward it. Set it low and you get false certainty; set it high and you may never give the decision-maker an answer.
- Models retained — how many competing accounts stay in the published set. More models are more honest but harder to act on.
- Responsibility stance — how sharply to fence the causal claim off from the moral one; higher for consequential uses (sanction, commemoration, reward) where the two are most likely to be conflated.
- Review-trigger sensitivity — what new evidence or reuse reopens the synthesis, trading stability against staleness.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the guard against monocausal closure, narrative moralization, and balance theater all at once: it keeps the account open, weighs models by evidence, and keeps causal contribution from silently becoming a verdict of guilt or virtue. It is the mechanism that lets an appraisal end in a defensible plural statement rather than a hero or a fate.
Its failure mode is that a plural account can frustrate a legitimate demand for a decision, and "keeping the models open" can decay into an alibi for never committing — or into false balance, where a weak model is displayed beside a strong one for the appearance of even-handedness. The classic misuse is exactly that theater: listing an actor and a structure with no roles assigned and calling it balance. The guarding discipline is to weight models by evidence rather than for symmetry, to state plainly what it would take to close the question, and to use "consider the opposite" as a real test rather than a ritual.
How it implements the components¶
explanatory_target_scope_and_use— it restates and re-fixes the scoped target the whole account answers, refusing to let a broad outcome smuggle in stage-specific causality.attribution_uncertainty_and_alternative_model_set— its core: it holds the competing causal models open with their uncertainty and relative support rather than collapsing them.responsibility_and_moralization_boundary— it draws the explicit line between causal contribution and praise, blame, or liability.versioned_attribution_synthesis_and_review_rule— it publishes a dated synthesis with the triggers that reopen it when evidence or use changes.
It produces no primary evidence of its own — tracing actions is agency_contribution_trace (the Actor–Structure Evidence Matrix) and following the chain across levels is cross_scale_actor_structure_interaction_map (the Process Tracing Across Levels); the review consumes those outputs and reconciles them.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Assessment, Review & Assurance
Rationale: Plural Causal Synthesis Review operates as a bounded evaluation of existing evidence or work that produces a finding or disposition because it holds several competing causal models open at once, restates the scoped target, and publishes a bounded, versioned synthesis that separates causal contribution from praise and blame.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Plural Causal Synthesis Review as 'Holds several competing causal models open at once, restates the scoped target, and publishes a bounded, versioned synthesis that separates causal contribution from praise and blame', so its operative form is Assessment, Review & Assurance.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Philosophy
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Multi-domain
Rationale: Holding plural causal accounts while separating causal contribution from moral attribution is primarily a philosophy-of-causation practice.
Related originating lineages:
- History & Historiography — Multi-causal historical explanation supplied bounded, context-sensitive synthesis across evidence.
- Psychology — Psychology and behavioral science materially shaped Plural Causal Synthesis Review through perception, judgment, learning, motivation, and behavioral bias.
- Sociology & Anthropology — Plural Causal Synthesis Review is rooted in sociology and anthropology: Social theory's agency-structure problem motivates holding plural causal accounts open before bounded synthesis. Agency-structure analysis materially shaped simultaneous causal models across persons and institutions.
Review resolution: Light authoritative-source research resolves the primary-origin disagreement in favor of philosophy. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: The Metaphysics of Causation directly documents the defining practice or theory described in the selected origin rationale. Other listed domains are retained only where the blind reviews identify material co-development or translation; broader adoption remains separate as domain_reach=multi_domain.
Attribution caveat: The named review is an encyclopedia synthesis of philosophical, historical, and social-scientific causal pluralism.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; high confidence.

Notes¶
This is the terminal mechanism of the archetype: everything else feeds it, and it feeds the outside world. Where the Comparative-Case Attribution Test generates an alternative-model set from real cases, this review reconciles all such models into a published verdict with responsibility limits — the difference between producing candidate accounts and adjudicating among them.
[n1] Consider the opposite is a debiasing strategy (studied by Lord, Lepper, and Preston, among others): deliberately asking why the favored conclusion might be wrong, and what an opposing account would predict, before settling. Used here it is the standing guard against monocausal closure, forcing the strongest rival model into the room before the synthesis is allowed to narrow. ↩
