Structural-Constraint Relaxation Probe¶
Counterfactual probe — instantiates Agency / Structure Attribution Balance
Holds the actor fixed and loosens or tightens one structural condition at a time to see whether the actor's effect survives the change — measuring how conditional that effect really was.
The Structural-Constraint Relaxation Probe asks the mirror-image question to actor substitution: keep the person and their exact choices, and change the structure instead. Loosen an institution, remove a resource, delete a coalition, subtract an exogenous shock — one dial at a time — and see whether the actor's celebrated effect still happens. Its defining move is that the actor is frozen and the world varies, which measures how conditional the individual's contribution was on scaffolding that was already in place. Where actor substitution tells you whether the person was replaceable, this probe tells you whether the person was standing on structures without which the same choices would have produced nothing.
Example¶
A central-bank governor is praised for single-handedly halting a banking panic with a decisive intervention. The probe keeps the governor and every one of their actual decisions, and relaxes one structural condition at a time. Remove the lender-of-last-resort authority the institution already held: the same announcement now carries no credible firepower, and the runs continue. Set the clock back to before deposit insurance existed: the identical statement fails to calm depositors who have no floor under their accounts. Restore both, and remove instead a friendly legislature's standing backstop: the intervention still largely works.
Read together, the perturbations rank how much the governor's effect leaned on each structure. The verdict is not that the governor did nothing — their timing and communication were real — but that the same decisions were highly conditional on institutional powers built long before, and mostly robust to the legislature's mood. Each run moves exactly one dial, ceteris paribus, so the ranking reflects single conditions rather than a blur.[n1]
How it works¶
- Freeze the actor. Pin the person and their actual choices as given, so the only thing that moves is a structural condition.
- Enumerate the structural dials. Pull the institutions, resources, networks, norms, and shocks from the path map — these are the candidate conditions to perturb.
- Perturb one at a time. Loosen, tighten, add, or remove a single condition and re-run the outcome, keeping everything else constant.
- Rank the dependence. Order the conditions by how much the actor's effect collapses when each is changed; the ones that erase the effect are the scaffolding the credit actually rests on.
Tuning parameters¶
- Dial selected — institution, resource, network, norm, or exogenous shock. Each surfaces a different kind of dependence, and the interesting ones are usually the conditions nobody was crediting.
- Perturbation size — marginal nudge versus regime change. Marginal changes stay realistic; regime changes reveal cliffs but strain the "holding the actor fixed" assumption.
- One-at-a-time vs joint — single-dial runs isolate causes cleanly; joint perturbations catch interactions but muddy attribution.
- Actor reactivity — whether the frozen actor is allowed to adapt to the changed world (usually not). Letting them adapt is more realistic but reintroduces the very agency the probe is trying to hold still.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it disciplines both failure modes at once: it kills structure-as-fate by showing the actor's choices still mattered, and it kills hero worship by showing those choices needed a scaffold the hero did not build. It is the direct measure of how conditional an agency effect is — the antidote to praising a decision while ignoring the institution that made it enforceable.
Its failure mode is that changing a structure would usually have changed the actor too — a different institutional world selects different people, offers different incentives, and shifts what a "fixed" actor would even attempt — so a clean ceteris paribus perturbation can be quietly unrealistic. The classic misuse is treating the frozen actor as a robot who repeats the same moves in a world where those moves no longer make sense, or sliding into an actorless-structure story where conditions decide everything. The guarding discipline is comparative-statics honesty: keep perturbations marginal, and flag explicitly the runs in which holding the actor fixed strains belief.
