A prompt or hint is a small, in-the-moment cue — the next step, the relevant feature, the strategy to try — dropped in exactly when the learner stalls, and its whole discipline is that the cue gets dimmer over time: more indirect, less frequent, and eventually withheld at the moment of impasse. What makes it this mechanism and not a coaching relationship or a piece of embedded help is that it is content-level and graduated: a single stall can be met with a ladder of hints from most explicit (here is the answer) to least (are you sure about that assumption?), and the design lever is how far down that ladder you make the learner reach before help arrives. The cue never does the task; it removes just enough of the impasse to keep the learner working, and it is engineered to be the first thing to disappear.

Example

A chess-tutoring app teaches tactics through puzzles. A beginner reaches a position with a winning fork but doesn't see it, and stalls. Rather than showing the move, the app offers a hint ladder. The first tap dims only slightly: it highlights the squares under attack. Stuck still, the learner taps again and gets a strategic nudge — "look for a move that threatens two pieces at once." A third tap would reveal the candidate move itself, but the app makes that tier costlier (it breaks the puzzle's "clean solve" streak), so most learners stop at the strategic tier. Over the next dozen puzzles the app raises the threshold at which the first hint appears — twenty seconds, then forty, then only on request — and quietly retires the square-highlighting tier for tactics the learner has solved unaided twice. By the end of the set the same fork pattern arrives with no hint offered at all, and the learner sees it cold. The move was always theirs to find; the mechanism only rationed how long they searched before a cue arrived.

How it works

  • Build a hint ladder for each impasse, ordered least-to-most explicit; never open on the most explicit rung.
  • Trigger on a stall signal — elapsed time, a wrong attempt, or an explicit request — rather than on the lesson's schedule.
  • Fade along three axes: explicitness (start lower on the ladder), frequency (raise the stall threshold), and availability (retire tiers the learner no longer needs), so repeated success removes the cue.
  • Keep the cue content-thin — it points at what to attend to or try and stops short of executing the step.

Tuning parameters

  • Hint explicitness floor — the lowest rung the ladder opens on; start high for fragile beginners and lower it as they stabilize. Too explicit and the learner never searches; too vague and they thrash.
  • Stall threshold — how long, or how many failed tries, before a hint is offered. Lengthening it protects search effort; stretch it too far and productive struggle tips into frustration.
  • Cost of the explicit tier — how much friction (a streak break, a logged use) sits in front of the answer-level hint. Higher cost preserves struggle but can feel punitive.
  • Retirement rule — how many unaided successes retire a hint tier for a pattern. Faster retirement builds independence sooner but risks pulling the cue before it is internalized.
  • Trigger source — push (system-timed) versus pull (learner-requested). Pull hints teach help-seeking judgment; push hints catch learners who don't know they are stuck.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it is cheap, granular, and reversible — a hint ladder meets a stall without redesigning the task, and dimming it is a matter of a threshold, not a rebuild. Its core tension is the assistance dilemma: help given too early or too explicitly short-circuits the very search that builds the skill, while help withheld too long turns struggle into helplessness.[n1] The classic misuse is the always-available, always-explicit hint button — the learner taps it reflexively and never encodes the pattern, so scaffolded solving masks an unchanged ability. The guarding discipline is to make the explicit rung cost something, to raise the stall threshold as competence grows, and to retire tiers on evidence of unaided success rather than leaving the full ladder standing forever.

How it implements the components

It does not size how much baseline help the task needs (support_requirement) or hand off the self-monitoring role (responsibility_transfer_marker) — its nearest twin Coaching Cue does that, and unlike a coaching cue a prompt is faded on a preset schedule of explicitness rather than on observed self-correction. Notes

A hint's fade should be tracked per pattern, not per learner: a student who has internalized forks may still need explicit hints for pins. Fading the whole hint system on a single global timer is the most common way this mechanism quietly reverts to permanent help — the learner outgrows one cue while still leaning on another.
