A faded practice drill builds capability through repeated doing across cycles, stripping one layer of support and adding variation each round — supported reps, then thinner-support reps, then varied reps, then unsupported reps — until the performer succeeds on unsupported, varied trials. What makes it this mechanism and not worked-example fading is that it is a repetition regimen, not the study of an exemplar: it does not supply a scaffold of its own so much as orchestrate the removal of whatever scaffolds sit on each cycle — prompts, worked models, templates — while deliberately changing the surface so the skill must generalize. It is the layer-stripping engine, and it consumes the other scaffolds as its removable layers.

Example

A nursing skills lab teaches suturing on practice pads. The regimen runs in cycles, each removing a layer. Cycle one: the pad has the incision and the ideal stitch spacing pre-printed, an instructor prompts each move, and the reps are all the same straight laceration. Cycle two removes the printed guide — the learner judges spacing themselves — but the prompts remain. Cycle three removes the prompts and introduces variation: curved lacerations, different tissue thickness, an awkward angle, so the skill cannot just pattern-match the straight cut. Cycle four is unsupported and varied: novel wound shapes, no guide, no prompt, timed. Competence signals gate the moves between cycles — the lab advances a learner only when their spacing and tension hold at the current layer. The point of the variation is that the final wounds are not the ones practiced; if the suture holds on shapes never drilled, the skill has generalized rather than been memorized.

How it works

  • Stack the removable support onto cycle one — a printed guide, a prompt, a worked demo — knowing these are borrowed from other scaffold mechanisms.
  • Strip one layer per cycle, advancing only when competence signals at the current layer are met, not on a fixed cycle count.
  • Inject variation as support thins — change surface features so the skill must generalize instead of pattern-matching the drilled case.
  • End on unsupported, varied trials whose configurations were never practiced, so success is evidence of transfer, not repetition.

Tuning parameters

  • Layer order — which support is stripped first (usually the most explicit, e.g. the printed guide, before the interpersonal prompt). The wrong order removes the load-bearing support too early.
  • Advancement signal — the competence evidence required to move to the next cycle. Strict signals prevent stripping too fast; lax ones stack failure on failure.
  • Variation schedule — when and how much surface variation enters. Early variation builds robust transfer but is harder; late variation is easier but risks a skill that only works on the drilled case.
  • Cycle count — how many supported, thinned, and varied passes before the unsupported trial. More cycles cement fragile skills; too many overlearn a task already mastered.

When it helps, and when it misleads
