A coaching cue is a responsive, interpersonal intervention — a word or gesture that redirects attention, invites reflection, or corrects strategy in the middle of performance — delivered by a coach who is reading the performer in real time. What makes it this mechanism and not a scripted prompt is that it is contingent and aimed at metacognition: the coach gives more when the performer flounders and less when they self-correct, and the explicit goal is to hand over the monitoring itself, so the cue grows less directive and less immediate until the performer catches their own errors. Its withdrawal is not on a clock; it tracks evidence that the athlete has taken over the internal coach's job.

Example

A club swim coach is fixing a teenager's freestyle catch — the swimmer drops the elbow and loses power on the pull. In the first sessions the coach cues every length, specifically and immediately: "high elbow, reach past the flags." As the stroke improves, the coach changes the cue's character rather than its topic. Directive commands become questions — "how did that length feel on the pull?" — that make the swimmer diagnose. Immediate poolside corrections become delayed ones, given after a whole set rather than after a stroke, so the swimmer has to hold and evaluate their own feel. When the swimmer starts self-reporting — "that one dropped, I fixed it by the third stroke" — the coach cuts cue frequency hard, intervening only when the self-correction fails. A short independence probe closes it: a timed set with the coach silent, watching but not cueing. If the catch holds unsupported, the responsibility has moved; if it collapses, the coach restores a thinner, question-only cue rather than the original running commentary.

How it works

  • Diagnose the cause, not the outcome — the cue targets the controllable strategy or attention error behind the result.
  • Grade the cue on two axes a prompt lacks — directiveness (command → question → silence) and immediacy (per-rep → per-set → post-session) — so the performer takes on more of the judgment at each step.
  • Withdraw contingently on observed self-correction (the performer naming and fixing their own errors), not on elapsed time.
  • Close and, if needed, restore thin — end with a silent, watched trial; on failure bring back a lighter cue, never the full commentary.

Tuning parameters

  • Directiveness level — command versus prompting question versus pure observation. Commands fix errors fast but keep the coach in charge of monitoring; questions build self-diagnosis but tolerate slower correction.
  • Cue immediacy — how soon after the error the cue lands. Delaying it forces self-evaluation; delaying too far lets the wrong pattern set.
  • Self-correction gate — the evidence of self-monitoring required before frequency drops. A demanding gate guards against pulling too early; a lax one risks premature silence.
  • Restoration thinness — when independence fails, how much cue returns. Thinner-than-original is the discipline; snapping back to full commentary rebuilds dependence.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it targets what a static hint cannot — the performer's own monitoring loop — and its responsiveness lets support track the individual in real time. The honest failure mode is the guidance hypothesis: frequent, immediate, high-quality cueing becomes a crutch, so performance looks excellent while the coach is present and degrades the moment they go quiet.[n1] The classic misuse is the over-attentive coach who cues every rep because it visibly improves the session — mistaking scaffolded performance for capability. The guard is to fade directiveness and immediacy on evidence of self-correction and to insist on silent, watched trials before calling the skill owned.
