Situational Attribution Review¶
Explanatory review — instantiates Essentialism Audit
Checks whether a behavior or outcome has been attributed to a stable trait when situational causes — constraints, incentives, role, history, exposure — better explain it, and states the situational explanation the decision should use instead.
A Situational Attribution Review takes a specific behavior or outcome that has been explained by a person's supposed stable trait — irresponsible, unmotivated, not a leader — and asks whether the situation the person was actually in explains it better. Its defining move is at the level of the causal story for a particular case: it enumerates the constraints, incentives, role expectations, history, and exposure that shaped the behavior, weighs them against the trait explanation, and, where the situation wins, replaces the trait story with a conditional one the decision can use. It does not measure how a whole population varies (that is Variability Analysis); it repairs the attribution attached to one person's conduct and the decision riding on it.
Example¶
A parole board reviews a man whose file is flagged with repeated missed check-ins, read as evidence of an irresponsible, high-risk character. A Situational Attribution Review is run before the revocation hearing. It enumerates the context factors the trait story ignored: the check-in office is open only on weekday afternoons, across town; he works an hourly shift job with no leave and would be fired for leaving; the bus route that once served the office was cut; he has no car. It weighs these against "irresponsibility" and finds that a conscientious person in exactly this situation would miss check-ins too — the pattern is a logistics problem, not a character one. It then locates the decision the attribution drives: this file feeds directly into a revocation and re-incarceration recommendation. The review's output is a de-essentialized model of the behavior — high logistical barrier plus zero schedule slack, not bad character — which lets the board redesign check-in access rather than revoke. The board's later switch to evening and remote check-ins is a downstream consequence of the corrected attribution, not part of the review itself.
How it works¶
- Isolate the behavior and its current attribution. Name the specific act and the trait it has been pinned to.
- Enumerate situational candidates. List the constraints, incentives, role demands, history, and exposure present when the behavior occurred.
- Run the counterfactual test. Ask whether a person without the imputed trait, placed in this exact situation, would likely behave the same way; if yes, the situation is carrying the explanation.
- Locate the decision. Identify where the attribution changes an action — a rating, a sanction, an allocation — so the correction lands where it matters.
- State the situational model. Replace the trait story with a conditional explanation naming the causes that actually drive the behavior.
It computes no group distributions and convenes no stakeholders; it delivers a corrected causal story for the case.
Tuning parameters¶
- Attribution scope — a single incident versus a repeated pattern. A pattern is more decision-relevant but risks importing the very group-level essence the review is meant to avoid.
- Situational-candidate breadth — how wide the net for contextual causes is cast; wider catches hidden constraints but can slide into explaining everything away.
- Counterfactual stringency — how demanding the "would anyone here do the same?" test is set; stringent tests avoid excusing genuine choices, lax ones over-attribute to situation.
- Decision-linkage tightness — how directly the corrected attribution is tied to the specific action it should change.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is countering the deep bias to read others' behavior as character while reading our own as circumstance — the tendency that lets a logistics failure masquerade as a moral one.[n1] It is the mechanism that keeps a single hard situation from being recorded as a permanent trait.
Its failure mode is the archetype's context overcorrection: attributing everything to situation until agency, choice, and current constraint disappear, which simply installs a new determinism in place of the old essence. The guarding discipline is to hold both poles — the review may show the situation explains the behavior without declaring the person a passive effect of circumstance, and without manufacturing a fresh fixed story ("people like this are always victims of context") that is just as rigid as the trait it replaced.

Situational Attribution Review fills the causal-re-explanation face of the archetype — the components that swap a trait story for a situational one and route it to the decision:
