Warrant-Decay Review is a standing, owned, recurring sweep that asks one question of a body of once-adequate beliefs: has time or a changed context quietly eroded the warrant that used to justify them? Its defining move is treating warrant as perishable — a belief can be correctly audited, confidently held, and slowly rot underneath as the world it was validated in drifts away. Unlike a tripwire wired to a pre-named event, the decay review is a calendared scan owned by someone, hunting for erosion that no one predicted in advance: evidence gone stale, a context that no longer matches, a population or regime that has shifted. It does not judge whether today's confidence is earned on the merits (that is a point-in-time review) and does not wait for a specific disconfirmer to fire; it periodically re-asks whether the ground under a belief has moved.
Example¶
A payments company runs a machine-learning model that scores transactions for fraud. When it launched, the model's warrant was strong — validated against a year of labeled data, hit rates confirmed. That warrant is exactly the kind that decays: fraud patterns evolve, customer behavior shifts, and the world the model was trained on recedes month by month. So the risk team owns a quarterly Warrant-Decay Review with a named owner and a fixed cadence.
Each quarter the owner does not re-argue whether the model is good; she checks whether its warrant is still fresh. She samples recent decisions, compares current performance against the launch baseline, and asks what has changed in the environment. This quarter she finds the model's precision has drifted down and, more tellingly, that a new payment method now carries a third of volume — a context absent from the training data entirely. That is warrant decay: the original validation no longer covers the world the model operates in.[n1] The belief "this model catches fraud reliably" is flagged as staling and sent for re-validation — not because a pre-set alarm fired, but because the recurring sweep caught the erosion that no one had named in advance.
How it works¶
- Assign an owner and a cadence. Name who runs the review and how often, matched to how fast the belief's context tends to move — the review exists only if someone owns the calendar slot.
- Scan the belief set for staleness signals. Each cycle, sweep the tracked beliefs for the fingerprints of decay: age since last validation, drift in the underlying environment, narrowing of the context the warrant covered, dependence on conditions that may have changed.
- Flag decayed warrants, not wrong beliefs. The output is a list of beliefs whose support has eroded — which is not the same as beliefs now false — routed to re-validation.
- Reset the clock. Re-validated beliefs get a fresh timestamp and go back into the cycle; the review is a loop, not a one-off.
The distinguishing discipline is recurring, owned surveillance for un-anticipated erosion: it runs on a cadence and looks for decay nobody wrote a trigger for, rather than resolving a single claim once.
Tuning parameters¶
- Cadence — how often the sweep runs. Frequent reviews catch decay early but burn the owner's attention on beliefs that haven't moved; rare reviews are cheap but let warrants rot between cycles.
- Staleness sensitivity — how much drift counts as decay worth flagging. High sensitivity catches erosion early but floods re-validation queues; low sensitivity keeps the queue short but ships stale warrants forward.
- Scope of the sweep — which beliefs are on the recurring watch-list. A wide list is comprehensive but unmaintainable; a narrow list is sustainable but can omit a belief whose context quietly shifts.
- Owner authority — whether the owner can compel re-validation or only recommend it. Compulsion keeps decay from being ignored but bottlenecks on one person; recommendation spreads load but is easy to defer.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is catching the failure mode invisible to every point-in-time check: the belief that was correctly warranted and has silently gone stale because its world moved. Because it is owned and recurring, it defends against the organizational default of never revisiting a settled belief until failure forces it. It is the discipline that keeps a once-validated model, guideline, or assumption from being trusted long past its evidence's shelf life.
It misleads when the cadence becomes ritual — a quarterly meeting that rubber-stamps "still fine" without genuinely re-checking the environment — or when the owner lapses and the review exists only on paper, advertising a freshness guarantee that isn't being enforced. It can also over-flag, sending still-valid warrants back for costly re-validation because a sensitivity dial is set too twitchy. The guarding discipline is a real owner with real authority, a cadence matched to how fast the domain actually drifts, and an honest scan of the environment — not just the belief — each cycle, so decay is judged by whether the world moved, not by whether the belief still feels right.
