Within-Case Process-Tracing Memo¶
Analytic memo — instantiates Deviant Case Analysis
Documents event sequence, mechanism evidence, actors, constraints, turning points, and rival-process evidence inside the deviant case.
Cross-case comparison can tell you that a case is different; only the inside of the case can tell you how it became different. The Within-Case Process-Tracing Memo reconstructs, in order, what happened inside the single deviant case — the sequence of events, the actors and their incentives, the constraints in force, the turning points, and the mechanism evidence at each junction — and writes it up as a dated causal narrative rather than a label. Its defining commitment is that it works within one case at the grain of temporal sequence and mechanism evidence: it stays inside the boundary of the case, follows the chain of events, and marks where the internal record supports or undercuts competing process accounts. It supplies the causal-mechanism evidence a comparison cannot; it does not build a cross-case matrix and it does not enumerate the full field of candidate causes.
Example¶
A regional airline survives a fuel-price shock that pushes three structurally similar peers into insolvency — a deviation from the plain "cost shock leads to failure" pattern. The memo reconstructs the interior. It builds a month-by-month timeline: the cash position entering the shock; a fuel-hedging contract signed fourteen months earlier; a board decision in week three to ground two unprofitable routes; a union concession in month two; a fuel supplier who quietly extended payment terms. At each turning point the memo gathers the within-case evidence and asks the counterfactual — if the hedge had not been in place, would the cash have run out that quarter? The hedge is the smoking-gun: documentation shows the airline's effective fuel cost barely moved while peers' costs spiked, and the survival story requires exactly that.[n1] The output is a dated, evidenced account of how this carrier escaped the pattern — the kind of internal causal detail that a side-by-side comparison of the four airlines could never recover on its own.
How it works¶
- Build the timeline. Order the events with dates, actors, constraints, and decisions, so the case becomes a sequence rather than a snapshot.
- Mark the turning points. Identify the junctions where the case's trajectory could plausibly have gone the ordinary way, and concentrate evidence there.
- Weigh the within-case evidence. For each candidate mechanism, ask what internal trace it must leave, and check the record for it — including the counterfactual "if not X."
- Note where rival processes fare. Flag where the internal record supports or undercuts a competing account, without pretending to enumerate or adjudicate the whole field.
Tuning parameters¶
- Temporal grain — coarse phases versus a fine day-by-day reconstruction. Finer grain catches decisive turning points but multiplies effort and noise.
- Evidence bar — how strong within-case evidence must be to credit a mechanism, from a necessary "hoop" observation to a decisive "smoking-gun" one.
- Counterfactual depth — how rigorously the "if not X" is examined at each junction. Deeper counterfactuals discipline the story but slow the memo.
- Scope of the trace — the full case history versus only the decisive window; narrowing focuses effort but risks missing an earlier cause.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it delivers the one thing comparison and inventory cannot — direct evidence of the mechanism, the how of the deviation, reconstructed from inside the case. Its honest failure mode is narrative seduction: a vivid, internally coherent story feels causal even when the evidence is thin or assembled after the fact, and within-case coherence is not proof of within-case causation. The classic misuse is building the timeline to fit a favored mechanism and quietly dropping the events that do not. The guarding discipline is to specify each mechanism's expected within-case fingerprint before reading the record, and to record the disconfirming events as faithfully as the confirming ones, so the memo tests the story rather than merely telling it.
How it implements the components¶
The memo realizes exactly one part of the archetype's machinery — the interior reconstruction that supplies mechanism evidence:
