Grand Narrative Decomposition

Break a sweeping explanatory story into claims, exclusions, assumptions, and alternative narratives before letting it organize understanding or action.

The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: A complex process gets described as a single inevitable arc, with the same few events carrying the entire explanatory burden and exceptions dismissed without a stated boundary rule. Earlier events are interpreted only as steps toward a known endpoint, alternative accounts are treated as threats rather than as tests of scope and evidence, and the narrative quietly grants legitimacy, blame, or inevitability without naming that it is doing so.

Pivot: Convert the grand narrative from an implicit organizing frame into an explicit object of analysis: inventory its claims, evidence choices, omissions, endpoint assumptions, causal compressions, and power effects, then compare plausible alternatives and revise, scope-limit, or reject the narrative based on what survives review.

Resolution: The narrative's remaining value — compression, identity, orientation — is preserved where it is defensible, while the blind spots it created become visible and correctable. Alternative accounts can now be engaged as tests of scope rather than as threats to the whole structure.
